About us
A membership based and not-for-profit industry association, Materials Australia's vision is to be the peak representative body, and trusted voice, of the materials science and engineering profession. We are dedicated to providing our members with a competitive advantage through access to industry, research, education, government, and the wider community. In 1946 a merging of a number of related societies formed the foundation of today’s Materials Australia. Since then, changes in technology and society have created new materials and applications. The diversity in Materials has broadened the scope of interest within the community. Originally focused on servicing the needs of engineers and metallurgists, Materials Australia membership has emerged as a representation of the new world of materials. Our members have a wide and varied experience from working with light alloys, new metals to ceramics and composites.

The curtain has fallen on the #CAMS2024 conference! 🌟 Just returned from Adelaide, where I had the opportunity to step onto the stage and share my research on Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing (#WAAM), Residual Stresses, and Mechanical Properties. I enjoyed the great exchange, inspiring discussions, and insights shaping the future of materials science. A huge thank you to my supervisors, colleagues and everyone who contributed to making this event so memorable — what a fantastic way to wrap up the year! 🚀 #AdditiveManufacturing #ResidualStresses #MaterialsScience #Neutrons4science #ANSTO #USYD

Thanks to Partner Investigator Dr. Christiane Schulz from LaserBond Limited (ASX:LBL) who yesterday hosted a visit by a number of our ECR's from the Swinburne University of Technology, University of South Australia and RMIT University nodes. This was an excellent start to a week where many of them will be presenting at Materials Australia's #CAMS2024. Adelaide greeted us with hot weather, but it’s nothing compared to the blazing advancements in materials research! This week, I had the opportunity to present at #CAMS2024, organised by Materials Australia and hosted at University of South Australia, where I shared my research on the application of electropolishing technology—a project I worked on during my last semester at Swinburne. Additionally, I also got to showcase our cutting edge EXP-SF stream finishing technology developed at ANCA CNC Machines. The conference was a great chance to meet new people, catch up with familiar faces and get update on the latest trends in materials research. A heartfelt thank you to SEAM_ARC for supporting this incredible learning opportunity and to the Australian Ceramic Society for the Student Conference and Travel Bursary award. Especially, I’m also grateful to Dr Minh Nhat DANG and A/Prof James Wang for their invaluable guidance on this project! And shout out to the Swinburne team for their great presentations and hard work. #materialscience #materialengineer

🌟 Honoured to be a Keynote Speaker at CAMS2024! 🌟 I had the great pleasure and honour of presenting as a Keynote Speaker at the CAMS2024 conference in Adelaide, Australia. It was an incredible opportunity to share our research on developing novel surfaces using unconventional colloidal lithography techniques, as well as to introduce the pioneering work being done in upcycling and recycling industrial research by our three key laboratories: 4F Labs, FiFa Tech Centre, and MUSE Laboratories. A heartfelt thank you to the organisers of CAMS2024 for their impeccable work and for inviting me to discuss our advancements in these areas. 🎤👏 A special shout-out goes to my incredible team at CSIRO, my collaborators and colleagues (especially Dr Ylias Sabri (RMIT) and @Adrian Trinchi (CSIRO)), and my past and present students who have been instrumental in driving these outcomes forward. Your hard work and dedication make achievements like this possible! 💡🙌 Here’s to pushing the boundaries of Chemical Sensing, Colloids and Interfaces, and Advanced Materials while contributing to a sustainable future through innovative recycling solutions. 🌍🔬 #ChemicalSensing #ColloidsAndInterfaces #Recycling #AdvancedMaterials #CAMS2024 #Innovation

Fabulous to meet our Plenary Speaker Philip Withers at #cams2024 in Adelaide (thank you Business Events Adelaide for being our destination host!) and how wonderful for him to meet the great Glenn McGrath on his way to the conference! #materialsscience #materialsengineering #materials
Meeting on of the gods! CAMS2024, the Australian materials meeting, has been great! I particularly enjoyed the talk by Julie Cairney who also recieved a well deserved award, but the main thing was learning about the breadth and depth of materials research here in Australia. Materials research is living and thriving here. Adelaide was a great location with the wine of the Barossa valley on hand to aid discussion and where else can you walk past one of the great cricket grounds of the world on the way to giving a lecture and have the chance to meet one of the all time greats (for non cricketers the one on the left!) on the way to a session! Thanks to Materials Australia and also to the Nikki Stanford, Tanya Smith her team and the University of South Australia for organising the biggest CAMS meeting so far. #cams2024 Marnie Hughes-Warrington AO
