Defects in long and flat products can disrupt production and impact product quality, particularly when striving for energy efficiency through hot direct charging of billets or slabs. The recently kicked-off project SUNSHINE - funded by the Research Fund for Coal and Steel of the EU - aims to tackle these challenges by focusing on the early detection of defects and identifying incorrect process conditions that lead to shape or surface quality issues in as-cast products, which may also create problems during rolling. By leveraging in-line sensors, advanced process models and tools like machine learning and artificial intelligence, SUNSHINE will predict the occurrence of defects and provide appropriate countermeasures. Alerts and recommendations will be developed and applied in industrial campaigns to evaluate and validate the effectiveness of these solutions, ensuring enhanced quality and a seamless production flow. #GrowWithRINA

What is it like to be an intern at our company? Vigo Toh, a student from Singapore Institute of Technology, joined our Singapore office, collaborating with both the Business Development and the Operations teams. During his internship, he engaged in business meetings with potential clients, thoroughly explored the responsibilities of a marine surveyor, and used his coding and programming skills to assist in developing AI-powered tools. Additionally, the internship provided opportunities to enhance his problem-solving and lateral thinking abilities, which are essential for any career. Sonnedix recently inaugurated its 150 MW Betierra portfolio located in Cuenca, Spain, which consists of three 50 MW solar plants. We acted as Lender’s Technical Advisors for the project. We were also involved during the construction of the plants which are projected to generate nearly 300,000 MWh of clean electricity annually since achieving commercial operation in September 2024. #GrowWithRINA

We recently held a dissemination and matchmaking event for our HYDRA project. It took place as a dedicated session during our Centro Sviluppo Materiali Dissemination Day, where STabilized ELectrical Steels for Electric Mobility Project (STeELS-EM) and MIRIA EU Project were also presented. It was a significant milestone to talk about the progress and achievements of HYDRA, which is building a hydrogen-fuelled pilot-plant for steelmaking. Beyond simply sharing results, it became a springboard for collaboration thanks to a dynamic Matchmaking and Cooperation Contributions session. A special mention goes to Snam S.p.A. and ORI Martin Group, whose direct involvement in HYDRA IPCEI is functional to driving its success with their invaluable expertise and commitment. We wish to thank also NEXTCHEM for bringing insights into the discussion about the matchmaking activity already ongoing, paving the way to further strengthening our collective impact. The event featured engaging discussions that paved the way for promising new collaborations and enhanced synergies moving forward. We have been selected by Hassan Allam Holding Construction alongside its subsidiary Kortech - the main Project Manager - for the systems of the Hafeet Rail project, a joint venture connecting the UAE and Oman via a 303 km railway network. The Hafeet Rail project will connect Abu Dhabi and Sohar, offering efficient passenger and freight transport with passenger trains exceeding 200 km/h and reducing travel time to just 100 minutes. This network will also enable the transport of 15,000 tonnes of cargo per trip, boosting sectors like mining and petrochemicals and enhancing the UAE and Oman’s logistics capabilities. We are responsible for ensuring the complete and safe integration of the railway's various subsystems, including signalling, telecommunications, and operational technologies. The American Council of Engineering Companies of Illinois awarded us and the City of Evanston a Special Achievement Award for the Evanston Main Street Improvement - Maple Avenue to Hinman Avenue project 🏆 Recognized for sustainable design, the project revitalized the Main Street Central Business District corridor, with improvements enhancing accessibility and safety for vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians. We served as the design and construction engineer, using innovative techniques to meet ADA design criteria and manage stormwater with permeable pavers. The project finished ahead of schedule, demonstrating the team's dedication and efficiency. #GrowWithRINA

We have secured a contract from PETRONAS CCS Solutions Sdn Bhd to conduct a pre-FEED study for a pioneering Carbon Capture and Storage project in Malaysia, a key step in supporting the country’s efforts towards achieving net-zero emissions. The pre-FEED study, due for completion by the end of 2024, will optimize the design for CO2 collection, transport, and storage. The project will capture millions of tonnes of CO2 annually, permanently storing it in offshore reservoirs, such as depleted oil fields. The contract covers both the Northern and Southern hubs, with three key scopes: the Northern hub’s onshore terminal, jetty, and pipeline; the Southern hub’s onshore terminal; and the offshore pipeline and platform. These facilities will be crucial in capturing CO2 emissions from industrial sources and storing them in offshore geological formations.
