The IPBES Transformative Change Report, prepared by over 100 experts from 42 countries over three years, addresses the urgent need to halt and reverse biodiversity loss to prevent irreversible ecosystem collapse, including threats to coral reefs, the Amazon rainforest, and polar ice sheets 🧊 The report identifies three main underlying causes of biodiversity loss - Humanity's disconnection from nature and domination over it - Inequitable concentration of power and wealth - The prioritization of short-term individual gains over long-term sustainability It outlines five key strategies for transformative change: conserving biocultural diversity, mainstreaming biodiversity in key sectors, transforming economic systems, reforming governance, and shifting societal values to recognize human-nature interconnectedness. The report emphasizes that immediate action could generate $10 trillion in business opportunities and 395 million jobs by 2030, while delaying action by a decade would double the costs, highlighting that the current annual spending of $135 billion on biodiversity conservation falls far short of the needed $722-967 billion. Read full summary for policy makers here: https://lnkd.in/deXa2DTR AnaEE-ERIC is dedicated to contribute to the strategies outlined in the report through our focus on ecosystem research, sustainable solutions, and fostering collaboration across sectors. And the journey has only just begun!

AnaEE-ERIC is a landmark European Research Infrastructure dedicated to experimental ecology.
À propos
AnaEE (Analysis and Experimentation on Ecosystems) is a research infrastructure which brings together a series of state-of-the-art experimental and analytical platforms for ecosystem research throughout Europe. By linking these platforms to modelling approaches, AnaEE advances our understanding of the environmental impacts of ongoing global change, and fosters adaptation and mitigation strategies for safeguarding ecosystem services and their economic and societal benefits. At the core of AnaEE’s approach is a network of distributed experimental facilities, through which ecosystems can be exposed to a series of controlled conditions, from land-use change, pollution, biological invasions, rising atmospheric greenhouse gases concentrations, and to increasing extreme events such as droughts and heatwaves. There are four types of platforms: • Open-air ecosystem platforms; • Enclosed ecosystem platforms; • Analytical platforms; • Modelling platforms; AnaEE provides open and easy access to resources and services to a broad user community world-wide to conduct excellent experimental research, foster innovation and provide high-quality information. It is a key structure to obtain the knowledge necessary to tackle the complex global environmental challenges facing human societies. It forges evidence-based adaptation and mitigation strategies that assure plant, soil, water, biodiversity and ecosystem health today and in the future. Those strategies are needed to maintain essential services to society, including carbon sequestration, food security, clean water, biodiversity.

The IRISCC project side event at ICRI 2024 focused on climate risks, showcasing how environmental RIs are directly contributing to climate change mitigation and adaptation, presented by Janne Rinne (Natural Resources Institute Finland / Luonnonvarakeskus), project co-coordinator (Luke/AnaEE-ERIC). IRISCC highlighted the importance of international collaboration among RIs, with the aim of building resilience through data sharing and integrated climate services. The #Brisbane Statement: A Call to Action Research Infrastructures are the backbone of scientific discovery and innovation, addressing critical global challenges such as climate change, food security, and public health. The Brisbane Statement, underscores the importance of long-term investment, international collaboration, and inclusive approaches to harness RIs’ potential. ENVRI Community at ICRI 2024: Advancing Climate Action and Sustainability Last week, the ENVRI Community made a powerful impact at the International Conference on Research Infrastructures (ICRI) 2024 in Brisbane. From side events to presentations, we have showcased how Environmental Research Infrastructures (ENVRIs) are key to addressing climate risks and driving global sustainability. Our highlights: ✅ IRISCC side event spotlighting RIs' role in climate change mitigation and adaptation. The side event featured talks from ICOS - Integrated Carbon Observation System (Werner Leo Kutsch), eLTER (Michael Mirtl), and IRISCC (Janne Rinne, AnaEE-ERIC). ✅ EGI Foundation-hosted session featuring #ENVRIHubNEXT, iMagine, and PHENET, demonstrating solutions for data interoperability, AI integration, and phenotyping challenges. The session included Eija Juurola (ACTRIS-RI), Ingrid Puillat (EMSO ERIC ), Stijn Dhondt (EMPHASIS on Plant Phenomics) ✅ Contributions to the main programme on topics like climate observation, sustainable agriculture, and collaboration with Indigenous communities. Other notable contributions include Yann-Hervé De Roeck (Euro-Argo ERIC), Emmanuel Salmon (ICOS), Niklas Labba (INTERACT). 📜 The Brisbane Statement, a major conference outcome, placed climate action at the core of global research priorities, calling for stronger RI collaboration to combat the climate crisis. 🌟 Check out ENVRI Community's presence at #ICRI2024: https://go.egi.eu/KMQkN
