Season's Greetings from ICOS! 🎄🌟 A big thank you to all the dedicated station PIs, engineers, scientific community and everyone involved in the RI for all the great work this year. Enjoy the holidays and have a Happy New Year 2025! 🎇
ICOS - Integrated Carbon Observation System
Research Services
Standardised greenhouse gas measurements throughout Europe.
About us
Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS) is a pan-European Research Infrastructure of twelve member countries and over 100 greenhouse gases measuring stations aimed at quantifying and understanding the greenhouse gas balance of Europe and neighbouring regions. ICOS stations measure greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere and fluxes over the terrestrial and marine ecosystems. The ICOS stations are run and funded by national funding agencies, institutes and universities, demonstrating an impressive joint effort to enable climate change research.

More than 230 experts from over 70 countries are in Kuala Lumpur this week for the IPCC Scoping Meeting to draft the outlines of the three Working Group contributions to the IPCC's seventh report assessing the science related to #climatechange. "The meeting will stamp the character of the seventh cycle", said IPCC Chair Jim Skea.

At #ICRI2024 in Brisbane, global Research Infrastructures (RIs) united around climate action and sustainability. ICOS and our partners and collaborators from #GERI, ENVRI community, #ENVRIHubNEXT, GEORGE project, IRISCC, and KADI Project were prominent throughout the programme, highlighting how environmental RIs drive progress on climate resilience. Key moments included: 📊 KADI’s Patricia Nying'uro, HSC & Werner Leo Kutsch Kutsch on the need for global RI collaboration and equitable funding. 🌊 GEORGE’s Yann-Hervé De Roeck & Emmanuel Salmon on improving ocean and Earth observations. The Brisbane Statement, a major outcome of the conference, placed climate change at the forefront of global research priorities. It called for stronger international cooperation and emphasised the role of RIs in driving climate action, promoting a green transition, and fostering sustainable development through research and innovation. Projects like #NUBICOS are already advancing these goals, expanding global climate services and developing the next generation of RI experts. ICRI 2024 reaffirmed the critical role of ICOS and environmental RIs in driving global climate action. The conference highlighted the need for continued collaboration, fair funding, and interdisciplinary efforts to support a green transition and build a sustainable, resilient future. ➡️ Read more about the ICRI highlights on our website: https://lnkd.in/dt5ZHWzG #EUResearchInfrastructures #ClimateAction #ResearchInfrastructures #ClimateResilience #GreenTransition #ClimateChange #HorizonEurope #HorizonEuropeProject #BrisbaneStatement

ICOS Director General Werner Leo Kutsch gave a talk at the plenary session of ICRI 2024. Some highlights from his presentation are in the photos below, but when discussing #ClimateChange and how research infrastructures may address related challenges, the 3 key messages are: 1. We need to work together as multilateral cooperation in science supports multilateral climate politics 2. We need the best available science in the form of timely, standardised data from continuous long-term observations 3. We need to provide sustainable funding and prioritise resource allocation towards research infrastructures that also address societal issues such as climate risks and resilience ESFRI - European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures European Commission ENVRI community
