About us
Mount Valley Development Association (MVDA) is a civil society actor that works toward improving the quality of life of rural people by promoting livelihood initiatives along with early child care and girl child education. The idea of MVDA was inspired by Sarvodaya Movement and its approach in Himalayas. In early 90s poor economic conditions and slow pace of development in Bhilangna valley of Tehri Garhwal district compelled MVDA to work for the economic empowerment of the community. The association organizes women, youths, and children to form different community-based organizations to link with different government schemes such as bank linkages, and employment and livelihood schemes. It advocates for effective governance by empowering women to take active participation in the local self-governance. The organization formally came into existence in 1995 and registered under Society Registration Act 1860. A twenty six year long journey and still counting, MVDA has always pioneered to design and deliver services to the local community.

Mount Valley Development Association is proud to stand alongside resilient women entrepreneurs like Meena kaintura, whose story reflects the power of peer learning and collective efforts in building confidence and overcoming challenges. At the Women Entrepreneurship Market Access Collective, Meena and others shared how education, savings, and community support have transformed their lives. These voices remind us of the need for innovative market solutions that address women’s realities and unlock inclusive growth. Let’s continue working together to empower women entrepreneurs and amplify their impact. 💪 MVDA #WomenEntrepreneurs #InclusiveGrowth #CollectiveAction
"... of winged, unmiraculous women, Honey-drudgers. I am no drudge Though for years I have eaten dust And dried plates with my dense hair." Stings - Sylvia Plath This poem by Plath speaks of her emotional turmoil as a woman, trying to establish an identity. This resonates with the lives of the women we work with—these so-called “unmiraculous ones,” who carry wings as metaphors, unleashing energy, dreams, and aspirations. At our recent Women Entrepreneurship Market Access Collective event, community women leaders, artists, and producers shared powerful stories of resilience, challenges, and the need for better market access. While community-based organizations have equipped them with skills and confidence, it’s now time for private platforms, policymakers, and innovators to create market solutions that address their needs and drive inclusive economic growth. Kalawati Rathod - Saath Ahmedabad: Mobility barriers persist; private platforms must innovate with women’s realities in mind. She emphasized how mobility remains a huge challenge for women like her, preventing them from accessing larger markets. Rizwana Begum - Creyo: She shared how her skills have been able to reach a larger public, allowing her craft to sustain her livelihood. Santosh Kumari - URMUL DESERT CRAFTS: Education transformed her life and enabled her business journey. Being the first woman in her village to graduate, she reflected on how education shaped her path and empowered her to lead. Naziya Mirza - Aftertaste_India: She shared how her daughters’ belief motivated her to recognize her abilities and take pride in her work. Ayesha Begum - Kriti Social Initiatives: She spoke of breaking stereotypes, learning to save collectively, and how it transformed her outlook. Pratima Rabha - Tamul Plates Marketing Private Limited: She highlighted how community savings improved economic stability and uplifted her peers. Meena Kaintura - Mount Valley Development Association: Peer learning fostered growth and resilience. She spoke about the importance of peer learning and how growing together has helped her gain confidence. Moderated by Rica Roy, this discussion brought to light the structural and societal barriers these women face. Their voices are a powerful reminder that true progress requires us to listen, innovate, and act. Let’s continue to recognize, support, and empower women producers, leaders, and solopreneurs to thrive. Now is the time to ensure their voices and perspectives shape market access solutions that unlock inclusive economic opportunities. 🌟 Highlights from WEMAC 2024: A Game-Changing Convening by GAME & The Udaiti Foundation 🌟 Yesterday, we witnessed the incredible power of collective action in driving change for women entrepreneurs. ⚡ Together with philanthropic partners, private market players, community organisations & women entrepreneurs from various backgrounds, there were collaborative discussions & knowledge exchange. Addressing barriers like access to finance, markets, & networks, we spoke about solutions that are transforming the entrepreneurial landscape for women in India. ✨ Here’s what stood out: 💡 WEMAC Compendium Case Studies Showcase: We unveiled case studies highlighting successful collectivisation models that have enabled market access & growth for women entrepreneurs. 💫 Celebrating Women’s Stories: Women entrepreneurs took the stage to share their personal journeys — navigating challenges, seizing opportunities, & achieving remarkable milestones. 🤝 Collaborative Discussions: The event fostered dynamic dialogue between philanthropic partners, private sector leaders, & community organisations, sparking ideas for actionable, scalable solutions. Our first panel was From Spare Change to Real Change. This discussion brought together philanthropic partners & private sector leaders who spoke about the need for patient capital to drive innovation to newer markets that would help women entrepreneurs. Our second panel, Winged Unmiraculous Women: Building Collective Strength – Motivations & Early Challenges, and our third panel, Still I Rise: Leadership Through Collectivizations, brought together women entrepreneurs from across India to share their inspiring journeys. These discussions delved into their motivations, early challenges, & how collectives have played a transformative role in shaping their personal & professional growth, enabling them to overcome barriers & build sustainable livelihoods. Each of them navigated unique hurdles, yet the shared experience of overcoming barriers as women fostered a deep sense of connection & solidarity. Together, we explored how collective efforts can unlock markets, foster innovation, & create a more inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystem. We successfully conducted a Selu (Bhimal fiber) crafting training workshop for #ruralwomen, led by our expert trainer, Swati. This initiative aimed to equip participants with the skills needed to create sustainable and marketable products. During the training, they learned to craft various items, including eco-friendly bags, traditional mats, decorative wall hangings, stylish jewelry, and intricate coasters. These products not only represent their creativity but also contribute to their financial independence and community development. We're excited to witness the positive impact this training will have on their entrepreneurial journeys. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Sasha Association For Craft Producers team for their vital contributions to the community and for their support in making this training a reality.
