At last we have a thought leader in the #CircularEconomy space shining a spotlight on the significant and often overlooked issue of office furniture waste 👏🏻 Office furniture is a key contributor to global waste, with millions of tonnes discarded annually, much of it ending up in landfills despite being largely reusable or recyclable. This presents a huge opportunity for innovation and sustainability in a sector that has traditionally operated on a linear “take-make-dispose” model. NORNORM as showcased by Vojtech are making remarkable strides to address this challenge with their subscription-based approach. Their model not only keeps office furniture in circulation for longer but also redefines how businesses think about ownership. By subscribing to furniture rather than buying it outright, companies can access high-quality, flexible solutions while leaving the responsibility for maintenance, refurbishment, and end-of-life recycling to the supplier. Of course there are still challenges to overcome. Scaling subscription models in a way that is both economically viable and environmentally impactful requires solving issues like reverse logistics, refurbishing infrastructure, and customer behaviour shifts. Additionally the economic feasibility of subscription services can be a bottleneck, particularly for smaller companies or organisations in markets where such models are less established. That said subscription models offer a rare and much-needed mechanism for holding manufacturers and suppliers accountable for the entire product lifecycle. This creates incentives for designing products that are durable, repairable, and recyclable—essential principles of the circular economy. It’s encouraging to see companies like NORNORM taking bold steps in this direction. If we’re serious about achieving a more sustainable future, tackling waste in sectors like office furniture is an essential part of the journey. It is growing in Europe (likely more to come) for office furniture, where businesses rent instead of owning, maximizing value and minimizing waste. Similarly, that makes me recall Interface pioneered circular solutions in commercial flooring, including carpets, now accessible in major cities worldwide. Investing in a good office, safe / accessible location, with well-done interiors is one of the biggest productivity hacks for any co.
