LabelledGreenData4All is a project by Umweltbundesamt - German Environment Agency, Fraunhofer IGD, and wetransform gmbh focused on the improvement of data annotation within the environmental sector. It aims to identify where the greatest opportunities are for the efficient future use of machine learning models. Over the course of this project, we have learned many lessons. Absolutely thrilled that CIWEM (The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management) and Content With Purpose have been able to produce this fantastic video about our ‘Road Pollution Solutions’ tool. This online tool, which was officially launched last year, highlights where the opportunities are to install nature-based solutions, such as wetlands, to tackle road runoff pollution before it ends up in London’s rivers. Road runoff occurs when pollutants settle on the surface of the road – such as residue from oil spills, as well as tyre and brake wear from vehicles. These build up during dry weather and are then washed into rivers and streams when it rains. ‘Natural barriers’ such as wetlands can filter these pollutants before they flow into rivers. Our Head of Improving Rivers, John Bryden, is featured in this video with Middlesex University’s Lian Lundy and Enfield Council’s Ian Russell explaining how we harness data to amplify nature-based solutions. Over the past year, the tool has been aiming to help decision makers to prioritise the right water quality improvement interventions at road locations in Outer London where surface water drains to the rivers. It has also focused on interventions on London’s main strategic road network. We are currently working with the British Geological Survey and Imperial College London to expand the model to the Upper Thames area and expand the modelling approach to include agricultural pollution. This explores the fundamental role of the guardians of our environment, and the solutions to unlocking a more resilient, thriving future for all life on Earth.
