Traumatic brain injury (TBI) induces complex alterations in brain wiring and network functionality, with evidence from multiple studies indicating that faulty neural pathways often emerge during the repair process. Here are key findings based on imaging studies and related research: 1. Functional Reorganization and Faulty Pathways: • Jarrahi et al. (2020) highlighted that secondary injury pathways following TBI often disrupt ATP production and neuronal ionic homeostasis, resulting in the formation of incorrect neural circuits during repair. These changes may impede functional recovery and highlight the vulnerability of the brain’s repair mechanisms. 2. Neuroplasticity in Axonal Repair: • Miyake et al. (2015) demonstrated that axonal rewiring post-TBI can be maladaptive. The study used imaging techniques to show altered corticospinal tract activity, emphasizing that faulty connections often replace lost pathways, compromising motor recovery. 3. Imaging of Diffuse Brain Activation: • Lifshitz et al. (2010) used imaging to observe that diffuse TBI initially suppresses and later overactivates the somatosensory circuits, leading to incomplete or incorrect synaptic recovery. This finding underscores the phased neuroplastic response in TBI. 4. Functional Neuroimaging Insights: • Medaglia (2017) used functional neuroimaging to trace reorganization in TBI patients, revealing that specific brain regions take over functions from damaged areas. However, these compensatory mechanisms often introduce inefficiencies or inaccuracies in task execution. 5. Network Disruptions in Mild TBI: • Castellanos et al. (2011) explored functional network reorganization and identified disrupted intracortical pathways as key contributors to cognitive deficits post-TBI. These disruptions reflect maladaptive rewiring, as observed via advanced connectivity analyses. 6. Chronic Pathway Changes: • Kaplan et al. (2018) emphasized the long-term maladaptive remodeling of axonal and dendritic pathways post-TBI. These changes, identified through advanced imaging, contribute to sustained cognitive and emotional disturbances. 7. Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB) Integrity: • Shlosberg et al. (2010) noted that TBI-induced BBB breakdown activates faulty pathways through abnormal ion fluxes and neuroinflammation, further complicating the repair process. 8. Adaptive Neuroplasticity in Recovery: • Zotey et al. (2023) examined adaptive and maladaptive neuroplasticity mechanisms. They emphasized that while some neural rewiring post-TBI enhances recovery, faulty synaptic connections often hinder overall functional outcomes. These studies collectively emphasize the dual nature of neural repair post-TBI, where adaptive plasticity can restore function but is frequently accompanied by maladaptive rewiring.

A must-read paper on Palestinian health, and, more broadly, on (mental) health in conflict and #globalhealth. This paper is all the more important as we come to the end of 1 year of live streamed "genocidal crimes against humanity", and still ongoing... 💬 "What is needed is rebuilding the material, social and inner life worlds to support personal, communal and intergenerational recovery and healing." 👉 The authors propose 3 essential factors for healing "to take place at individual and community levels in the Gaza Strip": - Safety and allyship, - Right to agency, - Acknowledgement, accountability and reparations. Read their paper below for more 👇
📢New publication! Check out this new publication coauthored by our researchers Dr. #Rita_Giacaman and Dr. #Weeam_Hammoudeh entitled "Unbearable suffering: mental health consequences of the October 2023 Israeli military assault on the Gaza Strip". In their commentary, the researchers argue about the need for linking the biomedical and political spheres through the concept of social suffering which exposes the socio-political conditions of life and the collective trauma-inducing nature of the Israeli military occupation and repression. 🇺🇦 Day 731 of Russia’s 3-day invasion plan for Ukraine — Two years since Russia invaded Ukraine and as hundreds of thousands fled west into Poland and beyond, GSMSG’s first team of prior DoD physicians/surgeons, veteran Navy SEALs and Army SF loaded up at the border and moved east. At the time the assumption was Russian forces would overrun most of Ukraine in a matter of days, but it was our responsibility to prepare as much of the Ukrainian population as possible to stay alive and fight back. Well here we are, two years later, over 23,000 Ukrainians trained, and the Ukrainian population has proven to be far more resilient and resistant to the big bad Russian army than anyone had imagined. If only those politicians in the West, who don’t understand what is at stake, would pull their heads out of the sand, Ukraine could actually win this war and put an end to this conflict. Innumerable acts of absolute heroism by Ukrainians will someday come to light and will surely continue to the end, whatever and whenever that may be. In the meantime, GSMSG, with YOUR support, will continue to reinforce our Ukrainian partners in whatever way we can. . So do you want to help in a direct way? Then support GSMSG. Go to www.GSMSG.org and do your part. . Слава Україні . It's important to show the bloody details of war like this. People instinctively turn away and some even think it's "just too much for public spaces" but this is the world we live in. These are the effects of incendiary weapons being dropped on civilian areas in Ukraine. Before the internet perhaps 0.1% of society had ever seen what a field hospital looked like. Today it's still really low. That disconnection between the imagination and the reality of war disconnects people from the suffering involved. We should focus more on helping in these situations than turning away from them. Russia illegally invaded Ukraine and did this. They create mass graves in occupied areas, so there can be no "surrender" - they have to be resisted to the end. Ukraine should have everything it needs to protect itself from this evil. If it makes you angry, help in whatever way you can. The sooner the invaders leave the sooner things like this will stop happening. #Hospital #FieldHospital #Firerescue #Fire #Trauma #Surgery #MedicalTeam #SurgicalInnovation #Army #Natsec #NATO #Europe #Freedom #HumanRightsViolations #HumanRights #CivilRights

There are a few stories about Ukrainian women defenders in the New York Times that I am so proud of. A story about one of my friends is also in the article. The article should remind people around the world that we in Ukraine don't just try to survive and not die from daily shellings by the russian army throughout Ukraine. Instead, we're building careers, raising kids, supporting our army, and choosing your right to freedom. It's how we live now. #StandWithUkraine https://lnkd.in/dNev4QyT
