Institute of Community and Public Health
Research
Our vision is to improve the health of Palestinians in Palestine and in the diaspora.
About us
ICPH was established informally as Palestinian social action was emerging at the end of the 1970’s, then as a formal university unit, a department, and as an institute in 1998. Its mission and goals have been primarily defined by the extra-ordinary conditions of Israeli military occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The institute's inception, growth and development were a response to the Palestinian community's need for generating the evidence required to develop independent and informed health policies, plans and programs. ICPH aims to contribute to the protection and improvement of the health of the Palestinian population through research, teaching the Master's in Public Health (MPH) and Diploma programs, and the capacity building of public health providers and planners. Its theoretical foundations are based on the notion that health is socially constructed; and on understanding health and disease in context, taking shape over the life course. Medical services are considered important for achieving health, but not sufficient, requiring additional action outside health services and within community and society to address the structural factors that influence health and well being, such as economic, social, cultural, political, and environmental influences on health. ICPH defines health as a basic human right, and focuses on justice in health It promotes a multidisciplinary and inter-sectoral approach to address health problems, and for the promotion of population health .This approach requires team work, and a focus on issues as opposed to disciplines. Active cooperation with community and society ensures that the link between theory and practice is maintained.

🌍 ✈️ICPH’s participation in the Global Symposium on Health Systems Research Dr. Maysaa Nemer, the Director of the Institute of Community and Public (ICPH), participated in the Eighth Global Symposium on Health Systems Research, held in Nagasaki, Japan, from November 18 to 22, 2024. The symposium was co-hosted by @Health System Global (HSG), Alliance for Health System Research (HPSR), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Nagasaki University, and focused on environmental health and climate change. Dr. Maysaa contributed to the symposium through presentations and panel discussions where she addressed the impacts of climate change on health in Palestine and the challenges of responding to this issue within the Palestinian context, which is marked by the restrictions imposed by the Israeli occupation, control over natural resources, and the prevention of environmental and health initiatives. She also presented the findings of her recent research, which examined the status of the health sector in Palestine and other health-influencing sectors, focusing on their vulnerability and response to the various impacts of climate change. It is worth noting that this research is part of a series of studies conducted in 12 resource-constrained countries to provide a detailed analysis of their conditions and to develop solutions and recommendations tailored to each country’s context. #HSR2024 #HPSR
