“Whether you’re eight or eighty, you want your world to work for you.” This quote from the “Unlimited by Design” exhibition at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York encapsulates the spirit of universal design. The same conditions for everyone, no matter their age, rather than special solutions for the select few. But what is behind the term “universal design”? How does the approach, which is at once both #innovative and universal, address the challenges of demographic change? Read more at https://lnkd.in/g4NCaG_q

Aga Khan Museum building itself speaks eloquently to concept of light and is an ideal venue for an exhibition on Light: Visionary Perspectives which celebrates our Museum’s 10th anniversary. In his letter (excerpted) to Fumihlko Maki, on 3 January 2006, His Highness the Aga Khan articulated his vision: "For the Aga Khan Museum, Light might be the concept around which you could design an outstanding Museum. The notion of Light has transversed almost all of human history, and has been an inspiration for numerous faiths, going as far back of course to the Zoroastrians and their reverence for the Sun, to the Sura in the Holy Qur'an titled al-Nur (the light). Decades of Western history are referred to as the ‘Enlightenment' for good reason." “I hope that the building [of the Museum] and the spaces around it will be seen as the celebration of light, and the mysteries of light, that noture and the human soul illustrate to us at every moment in our lives.* Light would be an appropriate design direction for the new museum and this concept is of course particularly validated in Islamic texts and sciences: apart from the innumerable references in the Qur'an to light in all its forms, in nature and in the human soul, the light of the skies, their sources and their meaning have for centuries been an area of intellectual inquiry and more specifically in the field of astronomy.” [Source: Philip Jodidio - Under The Eaves Of Architecture - The Aga Khan: Builder and Patron]

The importance of the display in an exhibition! The exhibition ‘Hello World. Revision of a Collection’ was on display at the Hamburger Bahnhof - Museum für Gegenwart in Berlin from 28 April to 26 August 2018. ‘Hello World. Revision of a Collection’ is a critical examination of the National Gallery's collection and its predominantly Western orientation: what would it look like today if a more cosmopolitan understanding had characterised its concept of art and its creation? How would an expansion and multiplication of perspectives affect the canon and art historical narratives? Based on these questions, the exhibition unfolds in thirteen thematic chapters as a polyphonic collaboration between internal and external curators across the entire exhibition space of the Hamburger Bahnhof - Museum für Gegenwart - Berlin.’ A canon for situational narratives was developed by the raumlaborberlin Widening the view and placing it in relation to international cultural and artistic production - also in retrospect - gives us the opportunity to see the artworks in a new light. On the other hand, the frames of reference allow us to uncover visible references and gain new perspectives. Based on this dialogue of ‘retrospective vision’, an exhibition concept has been developed that also translates this form of observation, questioning and connection spatially as a starting point and accepts the challenge of providing impulses for the future. #exhibitiondisplay #museumdisplay #museumcollection #curatorialproject #curatorialschool #venice #berlin

We are excited to announce that John Wood and Paul Harrison have been commissioned by the University of Bristol to create a landmark artwork for the new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus (TQEC). Wood and Harrison have been selected following a curatorial process led by Contemporary Art Society *Consultancy to develop a public artwork that reflects the themes of innovation and research exemplified by the collaborative, interdisciplinary work that will take place at TQEC. The artwork will be located in the Exchange Hall of the new building, just a short walk from the new Eastern entrance to Bristol Temple Meads train station. Wood and Harrison have worked together for 30 years and are based in Bristol with a studio at Spike Island. Their work explores how we interact with the world around us, often playfully highlighting the absurd. Their work has been exhibited across the world including the Museum of Modern Art and Times Square in New York and they have works in the collections of Tate London, Centre Pompidou and Arts Council Collection, amongst others.
