About us

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is North America's largest transportation network, serving a population of 15.3 million people in the 5,000-square-mile area fanning out from New York City through Long Island, southeastern New York State, and Connecticut. The MTA comprises six agencies: MTA New York City Transit, MTA Bus Company, MTA Long Island Rail Road, MTA Metro-North Railroad, MTA Bridges and Tunnels, and MTA Construction & Development. The MTA network has the nation’s largest bus fleet and more subway and commuter rail cars than all other U.S. transit systems combined. It provides around 2.6 billion trips each year, accounting for about one-third of the nation’s mass transit users and two-thirds of its commuter rail passengers. MTA Bridges and Tunnels, which recorded a record 329 million crossings in 2019, carries more vehicles than any other bridge and tunnel authority in the nation. • As we approach the end of another year, we’re looking back and reflecting on some accomplishments—2024 was an eventful year for the MTA! 🥳 2024 was a year of big anniversaries: The subway turned 120 years old, Long Island Rail Road hit 190, Metro-North Railroad's Hudson Line turned 175, and two of our biggest bridges—the Verrazzano and the Bronx-Whitestone—celebrated their 60th and 85th birthdays, respectively. 🚗 Congestion pricing became a reality: In the spring, the MTA Board approved a tolling structure for the Central Business District Tolling Program, and in the fall, Governor Kathy Hochul proposed a phased-in approach that begins Jan. 5. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/enfeHhXq 🟢 This year we launched OMNY for both NYC students and Reduced-Fare program members, offering brand new benefits (like 24/7 free rides for students) and an easier way for all customers to move throughout the city. 🛗 Stations across our network got a lift! Long Island Rail Road’s Babylon Branch & Metro-North's Harlem Line both saw 3 stations apiece become fully ADA accessible. We made significant progress on the subway, making 9 stations (including hubs like 14 St & Queensboro Plaza) accessible in 2024. 🎉 Access-A-Ride hit a ridership milestone, with a one-day record of 38,800 scheduled rides on September 4! This increased ridership aligns with our dedication to enhance customer satisfaction by improving on-time performance and reducing no-shows. 🆕 It was the year of the R211! Their debut on the Staten Island Railway marked the first new train cars in the borough in more than 50 years. C train riders, meanwhile, can ride our first sets of open gangway railcars. 🎂 This year, celebrated the 1 year anniversary of Grand Central Madison! It was also named 2024’s Most Beautiful Passenger Rail Station by UNESCO. 🏆 We showed our love for New York’s sports champs: We caught Grimace fever on the 7 train during the Mets’ run in the MLB playoffs, and after the NY Liberty won the WNBA Championship, the Liberty Av station in Brooklyn got a sign to honor the team’s colossal achievement. 🚌 We’re charging into the future with 60 new electric buses that will go into service in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island! We also partnered with NY Power Authority to install 17 charging points at Grand Avenue Bus Depot. 📖 MTA Arts & Design celebrated the release of “Contemporary Art Underground,” a new book highlighting more than 100 public art commissions. 💳 The MetroCard will be retired soon, and we sent it off with a bang with commemorative cards in collaboration with icons like Olivia Rodrigo, Victoria’s Secret, and Instagram. We also unveiled the next phase of commemorative fare media with an OMNY-equipped Barilla pasta box! 🚇 And as always, we’re most proud of the fact that billions of people ride our subways, buses, and commuter railroads every year. Here’s to a billion more in 2025! Read the full list: https://lnkd.in/ekTn_rZa

  • With our “Sessions at...” music series, we help artists create “only in the NYC subway” moments. These surprise pop-up performances feature musicians delighting riders with live music in subway stations across the system. Launched in December 2023 with a memorable performance by Leslie Odom, Jr. in the 14th St – Union Square station, the series has continued to spark joy in 2024 with acts like Chromeo, Mason Ramsey, SHAED, cast members from Alicia Keys’ Broadway musical Hell’s Kitchen, and more. And since everyone takes the subway in NYC, we’ve even seen some big names in our audience, like Machine Gun Kelly and Trippie Redd! For those who miss the live moment, the magic doesn’t end there. Each session is shared on our digital screens and via social, directing viewers to the full performance online. Explore all past sessions on MTA Away: https://lnkd.in/emjz8Xq3 Who’s next?
