Check out this video with the 2023 MyImpact Challenge Grand Prize Winner, Caroline Gao, as she describes her organization, The World in Us, and what she learned and values about BRI's student civic engagement contest. #MyImpactChallenge #civics #BRI
We had the opportunity to catch up with Caroline Gao, the Grand Prize winner of BRI's 2023 MyImpact Challenge civic engagement contest. Listen to Caroline describe her nonprofit, The World in Us, a youth-to-youth cultural education organization, and the ways in which MyImpact Challenge helped her to connect concepts like citizenship skills and civic virtues to her work. “These are foundational skills and ways of thinking that I don’t think I would have internalized nearly as much as I have now if not for the MyImpact Challenge,” Gao said. https://lnkd.in/ebyqpN3X. Every quarter, Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation's team works together to distill the most impactful stories to share with our community. Sometimes we have so much content that the website can barely keep up. When I first started in the nonprofit sector as a storyteller, the credo was "no one cares about the sausage making." With so many places to contribute your resources and a greater desire to see behind the curtain, we have a new challenge as nonprofit communications experts. The sector and our stakeholders want more than a report out on numbers and outcomes. Some things our stakeholders want to undertand include: • *how* and *why* we make the choices we make, and how we continue to learn and adapt to do things better (see the scholarships story by Dana Crary, TTCF Community Impact Manager), • the intentional partnerships that help funders realize our values statements instead of checking DEI boxes for PR (see the Washoe grant story), and • strategies that help donors make the most of every dollar for greater impact in the places that they care about (see the Philanthropies section and our $10 million matching grant). This impact report shares a lot more than all of that, and I am proud to be part of the team of staff, Board, partners, and donors who make this work possible and hold ourselves accountable to our community. Please enjoy. #communications #nonprofitcommunications #philanthropy #communityfoundation

Delighted to share my blog for WINGS - I explore how charitable foundations are increasingly examining their wealth origins and recognising and addressing problematic histories. https://lnkd.in/eSuSeVWA And I introduce Association of Charitable Foundations' toolkit, providing practical guidance to support foundations in this work. Understanding the past is crucial for foundations, especially those focused on addressing inequities. #Philanthropy #EquityInPhilanthropy

A new report finds that, "Foundations have an identity problem. Americans have little understanding of what foundations do and how they affect our daily lives. This is not just a matter of brand identity for individual foundations; the lack of a clear narrative about what the philanthropic sector does, in a larger ecosystem of change, leaves people with questions." "Philanthropy’s New Voice is the largest study of narratives in philanthropy. It is a robust, multimethod research effort to surface the American public’s and federal policymakers’ perspectives on philanthropy, current communications practices at foundations, and specific types of stories that can increase the public’s understanding of and trust in foundations." Such profound and insightful work from the Center for Public Interest Communications. For anyone interested in #philanthropy and #narratives / #narrativechange, this is a must read!
After more than a year of work, I am excited to say that the Council on Foundations and the Center for Public Interest Communications's new report, "Philanthropy's New Voice: Building Deeper Trust With Stories and Clear Language," is out in the world! Our research found that the traditional model of foundation storytelling was obscuring the work and creating confusion about the philanthropic sector. Fortunately, we offer research-backed recommendations for how the sector can build trust and work together to tell stories that build to clearer, more honest narratives about philanthropy. It has been an incredible honor to work with the Council on Foundations and so many fantastic researchers at the Center and the UF Atlas Lab on this project. You can download the report for free on the Council's website (just by signing up with an email). I hope you'll read it and share your thoughts with us. We put a lot into it, and I know you'll find something you can put into action! #Philanthropy #Storytelling #StrategicCommunication #PublicInterestCommunications #Research #SocialChange

This discussion of evidence in decision making was eye-opening for me! You can now view it at the link below. We discussed: What is evidence? How do we challenge the traditional preference for statistical data to also include other forms of information? What do we do in the absence of good information, or, alternatively, when and how do we get beyond "admiring the problem" to stop data collection and act? What are strategies for dealing with "fact resistance" and data denial?
