#LAMASUS_EU is excited to share key insights from the second Stakeholder Board Workshop that was held in March 2024! Simon Kay from DG CLIMA presented the challenges and complexities associated with EU land use policies in the context of climate change mitigation and adaptation. His presentation covered anticipated changes in land use as the EU progresses towards climate neutrality, outlining the potential hurdles ahead. Simon provided an overview of the anticipated carbon sink for various sectors by 2040. He emphasized the interconnectedness of climate, biodiversity, and land use policies, highlighting the necessity of robust monitoring to understand their interdependencies. Furthermore, he introduced upcoming policy tools, such as the Climate Target Plan, LULUCF, Carbon Removal Certification Framework, and the proposal for a Monitoring Framework for resilient European forests. Again, there is a need for monitoring to check compliance with these targets. LAMASUS stakeholders raised concerns, including the heightened bureaucracy for farmers, and different policy objectives hampering clarity and flexibility. Questions were raised regarding why agroforestry is not counted towards carbon removal, the role of wood as a construction material, and the role of satellite monitoring systems to measure carbon potential.   Simon addressed these issues by highlighting the importance of agriculture in carbon sequestration and discussing potential policy approaches. He emphasized the need for balanced policies that consider both climate goals and nature conservation, while also acknowledging the importance of protecting individual farms and minimising bureaucratic burdens. Community participation and wellbeing are the prerequistes for sustainable NBS. This means incentivizing climate governance for sustainable future. Also, private funding should adhere to international priciples/legal frameworks on climate change, and hopefully would not lead to more emissions.

The UNEP estimates that the current funding gap for nature-based solutions sits at $200 billion. As we seek to capture the resilience dividend, how do we account for the value of #rain in our cost-benefit analyses? University of Miami Climate Resilience Institute's friend and colleague Henk Ovink, head of the Global Commission on the Economics of Water, delivered the opening remarks for the "conservation and restoration of water-related ecosystems for peace with nature" panel at #COP16. The Commission's recent report (linked below) explains the importance of #greenwater, the part of the water cycle that flows through soil and is catalyzed into rain by the evapotranspiration of plants. Every #SustainableDevelopmentGoal (SDG) assumes a stable water cycle, but half of the world's rain comes from forests, he said. Deforestation, agricultural conversion, and urban expansion can reduce rainfall and further increase vulnerability. Mr. Constantino Aucca Chutas, founder of Acción Andina and a UN 2022 Champion of the Earth laureate in Inspiration and Action, had the last word: "Conservation without money is just conversation. If that doesn't include local and native communities, it's a bad conversation."

🌳Regenerative reforestation news! New study finds that reforestation is 10 times more cost effective for climate than previously known. Restoring tree cover to areas that have previously been deforested may be far more cost-effective undertaking for combatting climate change and reversing nature loss than previously thought, according to a new "first-of-its-kind" scientific study published today in the journal Nature Climate Change. "We found that natural regeneration is more cost-effective at reducing emissions in almost half of forests, meaning that this more biodiverse method of reforestation is vastly under-utilised," said study lead-author Jonah Busch who helped carry out the research during his climate economics fellowship at the global NGO Conservation International. The research also estimated using a mix of the regenerative approach as well as the single-species tree planting method could remove around 40 per cent more CO2 than using either of the two options on their own. 🧐It seems like regenerative and circular practices and business models are the best and most effective way to reverse the negative effects of human industry and development and help humans live in harmony with nature. The agenda emphasizes the importance of collaboration among governments, businesses, and civil society on topics such as accountability, resilience and inclusivity. By fostering strong partnerships, can countries leverage diverse perspectives and resources to tackle the multifaceted challenges posed by climate change.  Accountability is crucial to ensuring that all stakeholders are responsible for their commitments to climate goals and that  promises translate into tangible actions that create lasting impact. Further, building resilience to climate change is crucial to adapt to climate impacts and navigating its challenges.  Inclusivity will be woven throughout the COP 29 agenda, recognizing that amplifying marginalized voices leads to more equitable and comprehensive solutions. Going with the Grain: Changing land uses to fit a changing landscape. Released yesterday from the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, this is an interesting read. “We need to change the way we use our land if we are to hold the line on environmental quality, let alone improve it.” I absolutely tautoko this statement. Land use practices have always changed over the years, the reasons for it now are different but the process has always happened. And it’s time for a transformational shift now if we are to achieve outcomes for freshwater, biodiversity and climate emissions. But, we need all the settings in place and all the support and innovation and good policy and case studies and leaders to enable this transition. This report unpacks some of this. We could get this right or we could bury our heads in the sand and remain as status quo. Remaining status quo would be disastrous. In the end, markets will define this but we need to be ahead of the game, adaptable and innovative. I believe Aotearoa can be world leaders in this space.
