Indigenous communities manage nearly 40% of the world’s protected land, yet they face displacement rates seven times higher than others. Alarmingly, only 10% of global climate finance reaches local communities. As COP 16 concludes with the historic inclusion of the formation of a subsidiary body to include Indigenous People in climate dialogues, our Senior Associate - Research, Vaishnavi Chauhan, draws parallels to how climate governance has fared in India's grassroots communities. This powerful article for ETGovernment captures bottom-up success stories while also calling for more robust frameworks to ensure equitable participation. As La Via Campesina and other grassroots organizations continue to affirm, food sovereignty, agroecology, and peasant rights are not only key to addressing the climate crisis but are also essential to rebuilding the social and ecological fabric of the world. By investing in the knowledge and practices of local communities, we can create a world where people and nature thrive together, rather than one driven by profit and exploitation. The fight for climate justice is inseparable from the struggle for food sovereignty, and it is through these interconnected movements that real solutions to the crises we face can be found. In December 2022, a global consensus was reached on the need to halt and begin reversing the loss of #nature by 2030. This decision was taken in Montreal at #COP15 of the Convention on Biological Diversity (#CBD). It is thus very encouraging to see that the latest research shows conservation efforts to be largely effective in slowing nature loss. https://lnkd.in/ed_Q5-r7 The CBD will meet again in October this year in Cali, Colombia to take stock of efforts to put the global economy onto a “#naturepositive” path. And the world’s efforts to address global warming and other rising impacts of #climate change will take center stage in November at the Climate Convention’s #COP29 to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan. With the attention of global policymakers focused more on dealing with the environmental and economic threats of #climatechange, it is vital to understand that these two global emergencies are intrinsically interconnected. The climate crisis cannot be solved without simultaneously tackling the nature crisis and vice versa. Related policy and investment initiatives will be more effective when planned with an understanding of this climate-nature nexus. It is fully possible - and most efficient in allocating scarce resources - to simultaneously seek both climate and nature benefits. Thanks in large part to the work of the Task Force on Nature-related Financial Disclosure (#TNFD), the siloed thinking of the past is gradually breaking down, for example through adding attention to biodiversity risks and opportunities in corporate financial reporting standards. The opportunity to achieve gains in climate mitigation and adaptation at the same time as slowing nature loss through cost-effective investments - such as in forest, coastal or wetland ecosystem conservation and restoration - must come to permeate both public and private discourse. This perspective also needs to guide efforts to expand related domestic and international financing for climate and nature action - acknowledging, for example, the carbon capture and climate adaptation benefits of healthy ecosystems as well as that climate change is a key and growing driver of #biodiversity loss. A much more integrated approach is needed if we are to place ourselves on the path to achieving net-zero, climate-resilient and nature-positive development.

The #bioeconomy can help climate-resilient development in Africa and the world. A high-level seminar on 3 October, co-hosted by the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and the Kenya Mission to UNEP (KMUNEP), explored how Africa’s rich #biodiversity can be leveraged through #sustainable #bioeconomic strategies to address climate change, land degradation and socio-economic challenges. https://lnkd.in/evT4yprY

Our own Elizabeth Levy recently noted that “in this larger culture of anti-ESG,” the Big 3 asset managers are reluctant to talk about the obvious impacts of #biodiversity on the #economy. Truth is, whatever they may say or not say publicly, biodiversity and #climate will continue to be a growing material risk for shareholders. https://lnkd.in/eqThJr29

#ClimateChange isn't just an environmental issue, it's a displacement crisis! According to a recent #IUCN report, by 2050, up to 700 million people and countless species could be forced from their homes. We must prioritize collaborative solutions that integrate #Environmental #Conservation, peacebuilding, and #Humanitarian efforts. MoEF&CC Read more: https://lnkd.in/gRWgm_gv

“We believe that investors can play a vital role in the fight against biodiversity loss,” says Anne Valto (prev. Arvola), our Senior Development Impact Adviser. What can it mean in practice? At Finnfund, climate change mitigation and adaptation play an integral role in our strategy, and biodiversity loss is recognised as a key driver of emerging changes in the financial sector. The two crises are inextricably linked and, therefore, they need to be addressed together. For example: 🌳 We have joined the Early Adopters of the Task Force on Nature-related Financial Disclosures, #TNFD 👉🏽 https://lnkd.in/dnTqSzji 🌱 We are preparing our first statement on nature and biodiversity, aiming to put together our principles, as well as to demonstrate our ambition level for today and for the future 👉🏽 https://lnkd.in/gxGUSjJx 🐼 We are committed to working with our investee companies, such as MLR Forestal in Nicaragua, and other financiers and partners to make a difference 👉🏽 https://lnkd.in/dw6t9hGk Happy International Biodiversity Day! 💚 #InternationalBiodiversityDay #BiodiversityDay #biodiversityloss #biodiversity #impactinvesting #developmentfinance #luontokato #biodiversiteetti #Finnfund4Impact Photo: MLR Forestal
