We’re thrilled to be working with Gorringe Patrick to bring cost-effective technologies to some of the world’s most remote surfing communities with our Surfer Scientists Project! 🏄♂️🏄🏽♀️🔬 Together, we’ll be mapping and monitoring coral reef surfing ecosystems, while collecting vital ocean data to share with international partners. 🪸🌊 Surfing communities inhabit some of the remotest and most marine biodiverse spots on the planet, like the locals from islands in North Eastern Indonesia in the Coral Triangle, where surfing has developed in relative isolation since World War Two. Surfing is huge. It presents a huge opportunity to assist local communities and provide vital information to better understand and protect our oceans. #ALiquidFuture #SurferScientists #OceanScience #Sustainability #UNDecadeOfOceanScience #CitizenScience #MarineConservation #SustainableSurfing #CoastalCommunities #OceanAdvocacy

An Olympic event held five months before its Olympiad? A venue nearly 10,000 miles away from the Olympiad's host city? What gives? In the XXXIII Olympiad, Paris, a city not known for its ocean beaches, has been holding its surfing events in Teahupo'o on the island of Tahiti on the other side of the world — 9,800 miles away and across the equator. But it's not the first time an Olympic competition has been held so far from the host city. In November and December 1956, Melbourne became the southernmost city to host the Summer Games. However, due to Australian animal quarantine regulations, the equestrian events occurred 9,600 miles away in Stockholm and five months before to correspond with summer in the northern hemisphere. What has Tahiti got to do with the Paris Olympics? To give you some context, Tahiti is the largest island in French Polynesia. And, French Polynesia is an overseas territory of France located in the Pacific Ocean. If you search this country on Google Earth, you'll find yourself in the middle of nowhere. Now the fun part is, that Tahiti is an Olympic venue for all surfing events. But among many other French territories, how come the organisers chose Tahiti, which is a whopping 15,715 kilometres from mainland France or as the French call it 'l'hexagone'? Some of the reasons are: 1). French Polynesia is home to the best waves in the world particularly in Tahiti's Teahupo'o where the mega event is being held. 2). Interestingly, this overseas French territory is widely recognised as the birthplace of surfing. With that said, here are some fascinating facts about Tahiti's surprising involvement in the 2024 Paris Olympics: 1). When two ends meet: The distance between Paris and Tahiti is approximately 9,765 miles (15,715 kilometres), making it the furthest distance between an Olympic host city and a venue. This surpasses the previous record held by the 1956 Olympics, where Stockholm hosted the equestrian events while the main games were held in Melbourne. 2). A floating athlete village?: Really? Yes, you got that right. Like Paris has its Olympic village in the city to accommodate athletes, Tahiti has a cruise ship (Aranui 5)!! A fun ride for the surfers and their support staff. 3). A first for Pacific Islands: Tahiti became the first-ever Pacific Island to host an Olympic event. 4). Not the first-cross continent Olympics: This is the second time in the history of the Summer Games that events are held in two continents. The feat was previously achieved during the 1956 Olympics. In a nutshell, the Parisian streets have met the Pacific shores. #parisolympics #tahiti #paris2024 #olympics #parisgames2024 Air Tahiti Nui International Surfing Association (ISA) International Olympic Committee – IOC

As the #olympics get going in earnest this week, not everyone's attention is focused on Paris; surfing heads to French Polynesia. Why? Well apart from the French coast resembling a lake at this time of year, at the end of the road on Tahiti-Iti is a wave unlike any other; Teahupo'o – ‘a place of skulls'. This wave is unique; A trough way below sea level, a massively thick lip plunging forward, with no back to the wave. Why does it do this? It of course comes down to bathymetry. Using new seabed data from SHOM and the Celeris wave model we can look at how the offshore features shape the waves as they approach the break point. Discussed in this article in the conversation and shown in the video. https://lnkd.in/gUyPTHQt Enjoy. History was made last Sunday: The German Surfing Championships took place on German ground for the first time - right here in Bavaria!🏄♂️ The newly built O₂ SURFTOWN MUC, located near Munich Airport International, provided the perfect backdrop for this spectacular event. Over 100 of Germany's best surfers competed for the title on the facility's innovative waves. With its globally unique wave technology, the o2 SURFTOWN MUC offers perfect conditions and attracts surfers from all over the world. The Munich region is thus increasingly developing into a surfing hotspot in Central Europe, which it already was thanks to the legendary Eisbach wave in the middle of the city.🏙️ The region's high recreational value is one of the reasons why Bavaria is a top location for international companies. The high quality of life, combined with a dynamic economy and innovative projects, is simply a unique combination.🌍 Do you want to ride the Bavarian wave too? Putting Rocky on the Radar The 2024 Paris Olympics have opened up a world of opportunities for our region, and here's why. With surfing events taking place 15,000 kilometers away in Tahiti and various events scattered across France, it got me thinking—what can we do to leverage this momentum and build up our region? We have a great water source like the Fitzroy River. Could we host canoeing and kayaking events? Imagine sailing competitions in the pristine waters of Keppel Bay. Our local basketball teams are already dominant; let's invest in a state-of-the-art facility to further the growth of the sport. We want to put Rocky on the radar. We host the world's largest beef symposium every three years, yet our infrastructure falls short, forcing many to rely on temporary structures. Rocky Nats is in its fifth year, but where is our dedicated motorsport precinct? We boast the greatest all-time touch football player and 11 world champions, yet the road into the grounds remains a dirt track filled with potholes. It's time for action. Let's get Rocky on the radar—not just as a slogan, but as a commitment to genuine improvement and investment in our future. #RockyOnTheRadar #InvestInRocky #2024Olympics #RegionalDevelopment #SportsInfrastructure
