What has Tahiti got to do with the Paris Olympics? To give you some context, Tahiti is the largest island in French Polynesia. And, French Polynesia is an overseas territory of France located in the Pacific Ocean. If you search this country on Google Earth, you'll find yourself in the middle of nowhere. Now the fun part is, that Tahiti is an Olympic venue for all surfing events. But among many other French territories, how come the organisers chose Tahiti, which is a whopping 15,715 kilometres from mainland France or as the French call it 'l'hexagone'? Some of the reasons are: 1). French Polynesia is home to the best waves in the world particularly in Tahiti's Teahupo'o where the mega event is being held. 2). Interestingly, this overseas French territory is widely recognised as the birthplace of surfing. With that said, here are some fascinating facts about Tahiti's surprising involvement in the 2024 Paris Olympics: 1). When two ends meet: The distance between Paris and Tahiti is approximately 9,765 miles (15,715 kilometres), making it the furthest distance between an Olympic host city and a venue. This surpasses the previous record held by the 1956 Olympics, where Stockholm hosted the equestrian events while the main games were held in Melbourne. 2). A floating athlete village?: Really? Yes, you got that right. Like Paris has its Olympic village in the city to accommodate athletes, Tahiti has a cruise ship (Aranui 5)!! A fun ride for the surfers and their support staff. 3). A first for Pacific Islands: Tahiti became the first-ever Pacific Island to host an Olympic event. 4). Not the first-cross continent Olympics: This is the second time in the history of the Summer Games that events are held in two continents. The feat was previously achieved during the 1956 Olympics. In a nutshell, the Parisian streets have met the Pacific shores. #parisolympics #tahiti #paris2024 #olympics #parisgames2024 Air Tahiti Nui International Surfing Association (ISA) International Olympic Committee – IOC

An Olympic event held five months before its Olympiad? A venue nearly 10,000 miles away from the Olympiad's host city? What gives? In the XXXIII Olympiad, Paris, a city not known for its ocean beaches, has been holding its surfing events in Teahupo'o on the island of Tahiti on the other side of the world — 9,800 miles away and across the equator. But it's not the first time an Olympic competition has been held so far from the host city. In November and December 1956, Melbourne became the southernmost city to host the Summer Games. However, due to Australian animal quarantine regulations, the equestrian events occurred 9,600 miles away in Stockholm and five months before to correspond with summer in the northern hemisphere. 𝗔 𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱! Gabriel Medina won a legendary heat at the Olympic Games in Tahiti. The Brazilian surfer received 9.90 points, the highest score in the still young history of Olympic surfing. But what you see here is more than just another stunning victory shot of the three-time World Surf League champion. This moment was captured in 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗵𝘂𝗽𝗼’𝗼, one of the most challenging and feared waves in the world. 🌊💥 Many professional surfers fail against this monster wave. Conquering Teahupo’o is only possible when: - one is completely connected with the elements - in a state of physical and mental balance - combining dynamism, calm, strength, and precision - mastered decades of training and ocean knowledge Being one with the ocean is something words can hardly describe - and that's exactly what this picture conveys! 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. To put it in the words of a communication girl: Emotions are the waves on which we can carry boats - or surfboards - to transport our messages (Sorry, I couldn't help myself 😜) I hope this image inspires more people to fall in love with this unique sport as I did - though you’ll find me on a longboard in much smaller waves.🏄🏽♀️ Fingers crossed for the quarter-finals! 🤞🏄♂️ #Olympics2024 #GabrielMedina #communication #Paris2024

The Summer Olympics started last weekend with the kind of pageantry and ceremony that I think many people associate with France, and Paris itself. I myself have been involved with the Olympics since 1998, which was the Nagano Winter Olympics. Ironically, perhaps, Nagano is well known in Japan for being the Emperor's summer retreat. The Tokyo and Paris Olympics share a number of similarities, not the least being that both involve certain events taking place quite far from the host city. In Tokyo's case, some took place as far away as Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan's main islands. The events that took place in Hokkaido were the marathon and soccer, and they were held there because of the extreme heat in Tokyo which reached over 40C/100F. Paris has Tokyo beat however, with the Surfing taking place in Tahiti, 10,000 miles from Paris in the French Polynesian islands. When events must be held outside the host city, and when any significant decision must be made, protocol dictates that the IOC must approve everything. For Tokyo, I remember being involved in IOC meetings where many discussions of that sort were held due to the COVID pandemic. The clip below from the BBC shows that the athletes are being well taken care of. They'll be staying on a luxury cruise ship that even has a tattoo parlor onboard. I wish the best of luck to all the athletes and the tireless work of my colleagues for the next several weeks. Jeux Olympiques : sportifs, a vos marques ! Made from wood and algae by the award winning PARADOXAL SURFBOARDS, this could be a game changer in terms of disrupting what we know and what we think’s possible. The level of innovation and experimentation coming out of France in the past decade is insanely positive. 🇫🇷🚀❤️ According to various figures, Australia, the USA, and Brazil are the top 3 countries with the most people actively surfing. While mainstream media might suggest the USA or Australia lead in surf innovation, they could benefit from observing French surf brands, who are quietly going about their business by disrupting/transforming the industry with a unique and thoughtful approach. Bravo pour votre travail, continuez sur cette lancée! 👏👏👏 Paradoxalsurfboards.com/en #paradoxalsurfboards #france #frenchdesign #quimper #quimperquiver #surfingfrance #surf #surfing #surfers #surfboard #surfresearch #surfscience #sustainablesurfing #sustainsurf #ecoboards #ecoboardproject #sustainability #wsloneocean #ecofriendly #planetearth #oceans #circulareconomy #zerowaste #climateeducation #surfersforclimate #wavechanger
