On this day in 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed, prohibiting discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life. Since then, workplaces have become more inclusive, but there's always more to do! Advocate for inclusivity in your workspace by: 💙 Providing captioned phones and video meetings with AI-produced captions. 💙 Creating adjustable and spacious workstations. 💙 Offering flexible hours and remote work options to eliminate transportation barriers These are just a few ways to make your workplace more disability friendly! In October, we proudly recognize National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), celebrating the invaluable contributions of workers with disabilities. Did you know that 1 in 4 Americans have a disability? It’s a powerful reminder that the people we work alongside every day bring unique skills and perspectives, whether their disabilities are visible or invisible. This year’s theme, "Access to Good Jobs for All," encourages us to not only acknowledge the talents of employees with disabilities but also to actively promote a more inclusive and accessible workplace. By making small changes, we can create an environment where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. A great way to celebrate Disability Pride Month and beyond is to hire people with disabilities. Right now, 85% of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are unemployed. Many of them want to work and have skills to contribute. Among those who are employed, people with IDD are working fewer than 13 hours a week on average and less than one-fifth of them are getting workplace benefits. But research shows that disability inclusion is a proven good business decision.
