To end the Family Office Summit, I moderated our MFO 2.0 panel featuring 3 major family offices and their leadership: Neil Nisker (Our Family Office Inc.), Greg Moore (Richter Family Office), and Stephen Harvey (Grayhawk Wealth). Then our second round of Table Talks led to our closing reception and that was it! Stats: - 260 registered, 238 name badges picked-up - 70 SFO individuals, about 1/3 principals / 2/3 professionals + 60 MFO, investment consultant people and IAs (50% investor/allocators). 90% Canadian SFOs; ~50% had not been to the conference before - 40% managers from Canada, US, Europe; fund sizes from a few millions $ to deca/centa-billion $ - 10% service providers (as usual, they had the benefit of 90% of attendees to speak with…a target-rich environment). As we work towards the conclusion of the Exit Planning Institute Season of Deals, the largest sales push for our company and certainly the most stressful time here at EPI, I approached the podium for our regular companywide Monday morning meeting. That morning I looked to motivate our team as we sat still 27% away from our goal with only 5 days left. A tall order no doubt. Bigger than we have ever seen before. Looking out at my team I saw 35 people who reminded me of a quote I walk past multiple times per day as I go upstairs or downstairs in my home.... "Do not follow where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." As you can see the picture hanging on my stairway wall has been through it. It hung in my apartment during my one year in college, and has been hanging in that same spot (though it may have fell or been bumped a few times over) at my home for the last 16 years. This quote has been so much apart of my life, that it even sat on my old school AOL profile as a kid. Today, I think it is a quote that describes all 35 people at EPI and extends to our 8,000 CEPAs in the market. We are a community that chooses different. We seek to change the outcome. We attempt to change the mindset of owners from year over year successful growth to long term significance that aligns business, personal, and financial elements. This quote helps us drive the change needed to help business owners successful transition and harvest value. This mindset, in part, is why Team EPI sits today, 2 business days later, only 4% away from hitting goal. We blaze the trail. We dont follow the path. What am I thankful for as we approach our Thanksgiving holiday? That quote, the inspiration it has given me, and the people who believe in it.
