Since 1960, Strasbourg, France has been one of Boston's Sister Cities. Last month, Alia Hamada Forrest, Director of Business Strategy, represented the Mayor's Office of Economic Opportunity and Inclusion at the 80th-anniversary commemoration of Strasbourg's liberation. During her visit, Alia met with the Mayor of Strasbourg, Jeanne Barseghian, and delegates from Strasbourg's other sister cities Dresden, Germany; Stuttgart, Germany; and Leicester, UK. She explored Strasbourg's innovation ecosystem, connecting with representatives from BioValley France, Nextmed Strasbourg, and Kaleidoscoop, a co-working and collaborative startup space. The Office of Economic Opportunity and Inclusion looks forward to strengthening the collaboration between Boston and Strasbourg and learning from new connections made during Alia's visit. Fun fact: Strasbourg is famous for its world-renowned Christmas Market and is referred to as "la Capitale de Noël"—the Christmas Capital of Europe and the world. #globalaffairs #sistercities #strasbourg #boston

In just a little over 1,000 days: — We’ve awarded >$25 million to 1,200+ small businesses — One of those programs, the SPACE grant, supported 90 business owners (75% POC, 65% women-led) and will be responsible for creating 800+ potential new jobs — We launched the most expansive Legacy Business program in the nation — We doubled contract awards to women- and POC-owned businesses in just 1 year — We spent >$100 million in contracts with POC businesses in just 1 year (1st time ever since the city began tracking) — Because of the work of my cabinet colleagues to make this a more livable, safe, clean, walkable, business-friendly city, we’ve lured companies like LEGO, Lilly, ArkeaBio, and EVPassport to Boston That was just the first 1,000 days. Can’t wait for what next year will bring so that we’ll have the chance to continue transforming the city where I grew up into the one we’ve always known it could be. Congratulations to Blue Mountain Jamaican Restaurant on their grand opening in Mattapan! Representatives from the Office of Economic Opportunity and Inclusion joined Blue Mountain Jamaican Restaurant owner Marcia Satchell at Saturday’s ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate their new location at 1301 Blue Hill Ave. Blue Mountain Jamaican Restaurant offers authentic Jamaican and Caribbean cuisine, including jerk chicken, oxtail, curry goat, rice, and vegetarian and vegan options. The restaurant was one of the 32 grant recipients of the third round of Supporting Pandemic Affected Community Enterprises (SPACE) Grants, which help businesses with expenses related to new lease agreements. Blue Mountain Jamaican Restaurant has also worked with the City of Boston's Office of Small Business, receiving technical assistance as well as new signage through the ReStore program and support through the Re-FRESH program. Last week, James Reginald Colimon, MBA, Deputy Director of Global Affairs and Protocol, and Shin-pei Tsay, Director of New Urban Mechanics, welcomed a delegation from Turkmenistan at Boston City Hall in collaboration with WorldBoston. Their meeting focused on "Social Media as a Tool for Building Information Resilience," a U.S. Department of State project aimed at promoting free press, fostering trust between media and government, and leveraging social media to counter disinformation and connect with audiences.
