Over the past six months, we at Pioneers had the privilege of supporting Wien Energie GmbH’s internal teams on their inspiring innovation journey as part of the Innovation Challenge #8. This year’s challenge was designed to tackle customer-focused solutions for the future of energy. Teams worked on five carefully selected problem statements, crafting, validating, and prototyping innovative solutions. Beyond tangible business outcomes, this initiative also fostered a vibrant, innovation-driven culture within Wien Energie. Through five intensive sprints and several onsite workshops, we achieved remarkable milestones: ✅ Conducted in-depth customer interviews and field studies to deeply understand customer challenges and Wien Energie’s technological strengths ✅ Validated innovative solution concepts in collaboration with startups, leveraging fresh perspectives ✅ Built initial business cases and created a forward-looking 2025 roadmap 💡 The results speak for themselves: After presenting their ideas to a jury, all five concepts were approved and are set to move into pilot implementation in 2025! 🚀 A heartfelt thank you to the brilliant Wien Energie innovation team: Peter Schliesselberger, Fernando T. Cavalheiro Garrido, Sabrina Müller, Fabian Kesicki, Stefanie Zajac-Podpera, and to our partners Gregor Pflueger from the Climate Lab, Manuel Rodaro from EY-Parthenon. Lastly, a huge shoutout to the innovators in all five teams for their creativity and commitment. It was an inspiring journey, and we are excited to see these projects come to life in 2025! Engineering participates in the first edition of "Pact4Future - The Future Takes Shape," the international forum organized by the Corriere della Sera and Università Bocconi, dedicated to the most current challenges of contemporary society and projected towards the construction of an equitable and innovative future. Our CEO Maximo Ibarra, during the Forum's Opening night on March 25, will dialogue with Daniele Manca, Deputy Editor of Corriere della Sera, on the impact of digitalization as an accelerator of change and business evolution. Institutions and businesses are called to design a tomorrow based on new shared principles, to have an innovative approach and to value creation. Because one thing is certain: technology alone will not solve any of the big problems facing humanity, but none of these problems will be solved without technology. We look forward to seeing you! Final Recap: Insights from the African Tech Festival (Innovation for Sustainability and Impact) The African Tech Festival was an inspiring showcase of the potential and innovation driving the continent's technology sector. Among the many impactful sessions, the panel discussion titled Innovation for Sustainability and Impact stood out as a highlight for me. This discussion focused on how emerging technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence, are becoming essential tools in achieving sustainability goals. Panelists from diverse industries, including renewable energy and financial services, shared valuable insights on the growing responsibility of large companies to lead this charge. Key Takeaways Technology as a Driver of Sustainable Business Models Businesses are facing growing expectations to align profitability with sustainability. The panel shared examples of how AI-powered solutions are helping optimise energy usage, minimise waste, and predict environmental challenges. For instance, in the mining sector, AI is being used to monitor water consumption and reduce carbon emissions, showing that operations can be both sustainable and financially viable. The Importance of Sustainability in Business Sustainability has evolved beyond being a moral responsibility. It is now a fundamental part of long-term business success. Companies that embrace sustainable practices not only attract environmentally aware consumers but also create resilience against future challenges. One of the speakers remarked that investing in AI-driven sustainability efforts is essentially investing in the longevity of the business. At COOi one of our offering under our strategy capability is sustainable business models. The insights presented strengthened our resolve to assist our clients with the best strategies to be more sustainable. Collaboration is Key to Driving Impact Innovation for sustainability requires collaboration across sectors. Corporations, startups, and governments need to work together to address challenges that are too large to solve alone. The panel emphasised that African businesses are well-positioned to take the lead due to the continent's unique entrepreneurial energy and ability to adapt quickly. A Personal Reflection This discussion reinforced the need for large corporations to integrate sustainability into their strategies and operations. Emerging technologies such as AI are not just tools for improving efficiency. They are powerful enablers of societal and environmental transformation. However, the panelists also reminded us that technology alone cannot solve these challenges. True progress comes from rethinking values and building innovative business models that prioritize sustainability. #AfricanTechFestival #InnovationForImpact #Sustainability COOi Studios

If the world’s most renowned engineering school asks you to share your knowledge about Nordic companies’ approach to #Sustainability and #Innovation, then what would you do?! 🙄 After living in Boston with my family for 2½ years, I’ve learned how much we take for granted in Scandinavia. Some of this should be shared with the next generation of innovators, so I accepted the invitation :) The Scandinavian countries have raised the standards of intertwining sustainability and innovation in today's business landscape. This can be attributed to our commitment to environmental and social responsibility, a culture of collaboration, and a long game mindset. In the recent decades, this has enabled Danish companies like #NovoNordisk to interpret and integrate sustainability into their core business models, viewing it as a driver of innovation rather than a separate initiative or conflicting interest. This holistic approach has allowed companies like ours to stay ahead in addressing global challenges while creating value and benefit for the people we serve. The emphasis on long-term thinking, coupled with focused R&D, has enabled us to pioneer sustainable technologies and solutions as an integrated part of businesses. Our collaborative approach is founded on a culture of trust which is essential to #CoCreate innovative breakthroughs to patients in a sustainable way. To me, history has shown and will hopefully continue to prove that the Scandinavian approach serves as a compelling model for businesses worldwide, showcasing how a focus on sustainability and innovation can drive long-term success while positively impacting the planet and society. I'm humbled to represent #Scandinavia, #Denmark, and the #BioInnovationHub, and contribute to this essential dialogue at #MIT!
