And I wasn’t invited to the fancy table where the industry greats get to celebrate each other in the same room. But today, I’m doing something revolutionary: I’m giving myself an award. So without further ado, I present: 🏆 The “Mastermind of Strategy & Culture” Award 🏆 For consistently showing up, staying rooted in culture, building meaningful partnerships, and navigating this wild world of media, marketing, and influence like the boss I am. Oh, and for doing it all with a finesse of strategy, a lot of heart, and my signature flair. It’s easy to get caught up waiting for others to recognize your brilliance. As mentioned, on Wednesday I had the honour of being on the judging panel for the Effie Awards 2024. It was a fantastic time spent with some incredible people hugely experienced in and passionate for effectiveness and seeing good work. It was good to see some familiar faces, albeit briefly and the flat screen version of them, as well as reviewing a very high calibre of awards entries. As promised, here are my top 3 observations of how to write a good paper based on my experience judging: 1. A well written, structured paper that flows from section to section is worth it's weight in gold. 2. Don't unnecessarily do your paper a disservice. It's worth paying attention to the category you are entering and making sure that aligns to how you have written the paper. 3. Be 100% clear on the results and how they match up against the objectives of any activity, and make the results easy to understand. When we say that an ad “sells”, it means more than money. A successful ad predisposes people to give you their attention, time, vote, good will, devotion and, yes, their money. Advertising exists to predispose people with values and beliefs that benefit them and our brands. That is why I loved my time in ad agencies and then continued as a client to value my ad agencies so much. If an ad achieves this kind of business success, it is doing its job. If it wins awards, that’s welcome gravy. From my professional experience, I can attest that it feels great to receive an award. It feels better to drive business results Tony Chapman’s posts are full of insight. The one I am reposting below made me reflect that ads that are created with the intent of winning creative awards are not really ads. They may be art but not ads. Last Friday we celebrated the awards. Today, we celebrated the people behind the awards. A grand haul of 18 wins. 7 Gold, 4 Silver, 6 Bronze and 1 Grand Prix! Whilst holding bragging rights for ‘effectiveness’, we are beyond ecstatic to also be crowned as most ‘creative’ at the recent 4As Advertising Festival. We are in a business of ideas and people. And thus, these awards are a culmination in the strong conviction of belief in our ideas and pushing to sell through to the client.
