Happy Holidays from all of us at nlmtd (DK). And thank you to all of our clients for making 2024 a year to remember. ♥️ In nlmtd (DK) we have decided not to focus on buying presents. Instead we are investing in a Holiday / Christmas initiative. This year's initiative is a sponsorship of a Biohut, also called a Fish nursery, at Klintholm Harbour. Biohuts are designed to restore maritime ecosystems by creating safe havens, breeding grounds and shelters for young and small fish. So a big thanks to all of our clients for making this possible and creating a huge impact for a minor harbour and the oceanlife surrounding it. Best holiday wishes from the entire nlmtd (DK) Pia Wendelbo Denisa Pirhalová Tabea Nafz Rikke Thomsen Kornby Monta sir Benali Maz Spork Maria Grabowska

When Ocean Basket introduced whole seabream to our menu two summers ago, we sold out in six weeks. This unexpected success led to a game-changing collaboration with ABALOBI – a local organisation empowering small-scale fishing communities through fair pricing, technology and sustainable practices. Since early 2023, we've purchased almost 28 tons of Cape Bream from these communities, paying R1.5-million directly to the fishers. This fair and consistent compensation ensures a stable income, enabling fishers to support their families and maintain their traditional, low-impact fishing methods. Our partnership has enhanced food security and preserved cultural heritage. By securing a reliable demand for Cape Bream—a sustainable, green-listed species—we're fostering a brighter, more resilient future for traditional fishers. We believe in the power of collective effort. Together with ABALOBI, we're making a real, lasting impact on the lives of many, showcasing how responsible business practices can drive positive change. #WorldOceanDay

One of Rotary’s 7 core focuses is the ‘environment’, so we jumped at the opportunity to take part in the Treekly challenge, whose purpose is to plant trees to combat some of the excesses of climate change. In the context of this particular Rotary challenge, mangrove trees will be planted on the Kenyan coast near Mombasa. They are well known for their ability to absorb CO2 and improve general biodiversity. The challenge ran for the whole month of March and required each team member to walk a minimum of 5,000 steps a day. Our Leicester Club entered four teams of five, which were known severally as Leicester Tigers, Team Amazon, Walk with Hope and Walk with Impact. The first of these consisted of Barry Davies, Ed Cufflin, Richard Power, Chris Saul and me. The other three all came from our Impact Group and were helpfully coordinated by Diana Esho. In the event, all our Leicester Tigers team completed the minimum of 5,000 steps for every day in March and thereby guaranteed the planting of 155 mangroves, to which another 50 tees were added as part and parcel of our entry fee. So we achieved a maximum of 205 trees, and it is felt that the other three Impact teams more or less did the same. It is therefore a safe bet that our wider Club will have guaranteed the planting of over 800 trees! Our Leicester Tigers team currently believes it is in second place overall out of the 22 teams that signed up for the challenge. First place is likely to go to Chichele Conservationists, who together have completed just under 3 million steps, which comfortably beat our circa 2.2 million ( an average of 14,000+ per day) steps and thereby secure first prize. It would be fair to report that much fun was had along the way; that friendly banter ensued; and that we are each slightly fitter. One of the biggest challenges in animal conservation is finding sustainable alternatives for communities reliant on industries like poaching or illegal fishing. What truly inspires me are the organizations that address this issue by providing meaningful, alternative livelihoods. These initiatives not only protect wildlife but also uplift people’s lives, creating a lasting, positive impact on both the environment and local communities. During college, I wrote an assignment on the shark fin trade, exploring the complexities of this issue and the crucial need for solutions that balance human livelihoods with conservation efforts. This topic has stayed with me, and I’m deeply passionate about becoming part of the solution. Project Hiu, a non-profit organization, stands out as a powerful example of this approach. They provide sustainable alternatives to the shark fin trade, offering economic opportunities for local communities through eco-tourism, while simultaneously working to protect sharks and preserve marine ecosystems. Through education and awareness, they’re making a real difference. https://lnkd.in/d7asVcpY https://lnkd.in/dezZ_tiT I’m excited by the potential to contribute to such transformative work and support efforts that positively impact both people and wildlife. #Conservation #Sustainability #WildlifeProtection #SharkConservation #CommunityImpact #Tourism #NonProfit #SharkFinTrade #MarineConservation

We are excited to introduce our latest initiative to support your passion for a long-term future for equestrianism, our Quick Guides! These downloadable guides are here to help you navigate and understand key sustainability terms in the context of equestrianism. From biodiversity and manure management to understanding the basic components of horse welfare, these guides will provide you with the knowledge and tools to make a positive impact. We've worked with the Research Group Sustainable Equestrianism at Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences to make sure everything is scientifically correct and with World Horse Welfare to provide their insights into the horse welfare guides. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dTWj5aNX With thanks to Inga Wolframm and Jessica Kysiak Stark for their support for these resources.

The EEF | European Equestrian Federation is stepping up in a BIG way—so I am all in when it comes to celebrate this! While federations often get heat for not doing enough, this initiative proves that change isn’t just possible—it’s happening! The Quick Guides—looks to me like a game-changing initiative that empowers all of us in the equestrian community to better understand and implement sustainable practices. These downloadable guides cover essential topics from biodiversity and manure management to horse welfare, all developed with input from the Research Group Sustainable Equestrianism at Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences and insights from World Horse Welfare. What’s the game changer here? To me when you look at these guides through the lens of the 5 Domain Model and One Health, you realize this can reach enormous proportions—it’s about creating positive states of being for all. It’s a bigger picture: better for horses, better for us, and better for the planet. Let’s keep learning, keep growing, and keep building and working towards a new way of being in the world—one where sustainability and the well-being of all are at the forefront. To all involved in the project Congratulations!!!! You made my day. #EquestrianRevolution #Sustainability #OneHealth #HorseWelfare #GameChanger #PositiveImpact #SustainableFuture #ChangingTheGame

Waste management on equine farms is so often overlooked - other than keep it all in one place and looking tidy but it really does matter to the environment and hygiene of any farm. As basics, equine facility managers should know what goes into your muck heap, how it breaks down, and what happens to it afterwards. For example: Straw vs shavings bedding. Often the considerations are volume of storage, horse health, cost, or our preferences of mucking out but not the ecological impact. Shavings while usually better for horses respiration, are normally from farmed wood as the intended product or by product of wood processing for other products like furniture, and have 10-15 times the carbon of straw (straw averages about C80: N1). In short, the nitrogen rich manure in the shavings is not enough nitrogen to offset the carbon and therefore usually a large amount of nitrogen needs to be added from other sources - organic or synthetic. If shavings muck heaps are spread on field, nitrogen can actually be taken from the soil, making it nutrient deficient. However, straw is a readily available by-product of food production, lower carbon and with organic matter of manure a better product to replenish soil nutrients. This below doesn't include the bedding aspect but does give you a nice refresher on the nitrogen cycle and remind us that our muck heaps and paddocks can be sources of pollution via nitrogen leaching.
