Fishing in Kismayo, Jubaland Fishing is a crucial economic activity in Kismayo, Jubaland, with a rich cultural history. The area is home to a variety of fish species such as sardines, mackerel, anchovies, tuna, and lobsters. Many fishermen use traditional boats and methods passed down through generations, while some utilize modern equipment. Koyama Fishing Cooperative plays a vital role in supporting local fishermen by providing resources, training, and promoting sustainable practices. Despite challenges like limited infrastructure and security issues, fishing remains a key source of livelihood and cultural identity for the community. Efforts to modernize the industry, led in part by the Koyama Fishing Cooperative, promise a sustainable future for fishing in Kismayo, benefiting both the economy and the environment.

Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance is thrilled to announce our collaboration with Temasek Trust, DBS Foundation and UBS Optimus Foundation who today, at the Philanthropy Asia Summit in Singapore, announced their strategic partnership to build Co-Axis, a pioneering digital marketplace dedicated to catalytic capital. PescaData, a winner of Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance's Ocean Resilience Innovation Challenge 2023, has been selected as one of the impactful initiatives featured on Co-Axis. PescaData’s innovative app is a pre-seed impact venture designed to enhance data collection, communication and financial decision-making for small-scale fishers. Over 1.2 million people in the Latin American and Caribbean region participate in small-scale fishing – with over 300,000 working in Mexico alone. The software can ultimately accelerate peer-to-peer knowledge sharing, so action can scale rapidly, supporting sustainable fisheries, Ocean health, and the resilience of coastal communities in developing countries. “PescaData is excited to be included on the Co-Axis platform. #Zambia’s Luangwa Valley is one of Africa’s greatest remaining #wildlife strongholds for leopards, lions, elephants and rhinos. It is also home to communities of small-scale farmers, many of whom are struggling to make ends meet as their soil is increasingly exhausted, causing crop yields to fall year after year. Many have to clear forest to obtain new fertile ground or produce charcoal for sale, and some have no choice but to kill wild animals to feed their families. COMACO, a local organisation, breaks this vicious cycle by offering an alternative path to struggling small-scale farmers, training them in sustainable agricultural practices that restore soil health and produce higher yields. COMACO purchases their crops above market price and turns them into high-value products sold in supermarkets under the label It's Wild! Foods by COMACO, providing the farmers with a stable income. In return, they agree to stop poaching and become stewards of their environment, protecting wildlife, forests and farmland. By investing in better roads, processing facilities, and market access, we can unlock this potential and ensure that artisanal fishing remains a vital part of our economy and food supply. In balancing our focus between inland fish ponds and coastal artisanal fishing, we must prioritize where the greatest opportunity for growth lies. Sierra Leone’s coastal waters are rich, and with the right support, they can continue to provide for the nation, creating jobs and contributing to sustainable development. ✨ Our journey at Ornatas over the last few years has been ground breaking, providing new understandings of Tropical Rock Lobster aquaculture. With every batch of juveniles we have produced since 2021 (we have almost completed our twentieth batch), we have gained new insights and understandings into the specific operating requirements that provide the environment our lobster babies and juveniles need to thrive. Our success at hatching and growing Tropical Rock Lobsters that look and taste great now needs to scale. The next phase of investment in our ground-breaking work is to provide a sustainable source of lobster juveniles to grow out and sell premium lobsters to discerning global markets. We are seeking like-minded investors to join us in this exciting world changing effort to develop technology that can monitor and manage our hatchery water all day, every day, to make sure we hatch and nurture as many baby lobsters as possible. While we are mesmerized by the big cat & the big five, below the shrubs & in the sun baked plain lands of Turkana, there’s a hard worker whose work is just as important to the ecosystem as those that are in our faces daily. The mighty dung beetle plays a critical role in maintaining Turkana's ecosystem. Despite its small size, the dung beetle is one of the strongest creatures on Earth, capable of moving objects over 1,000 times its own weight. By burying dung, it contributes to soil health by reducing parasites and promoting plant growth, which in turn supports the livestock that the Turkana people rely on. Through sustainable herding practices, the Turkana people help maintain this delicate balance, ensuring the land remains fertile for both livestock and wildlife. This mutual dependency reflects a natural coexistence where both the environment and the community thrive by respecting and maintaining each other’s well-being. Filmed in Lodwar, Turkana.

My friends Dasun D. Silva, Malika Sugathapala and I started our first company Seashore Garden together almost three years ago. One key takeaway from this journey has been discovering the amazing resources and opportunities available in Sri Lanka, whose potential is yet to be fully realized. Our mission has been to unleash the boundless potential of seaweed while empowering rural coastal communities in the process. Looking back, we’ve come a long way: • Produced and exported over 30 tons of seaweed that exceeds global standards. • Supported and actively worked with a network of 50 seaweed farming families in the North. • Started Sri Lanka’s first active seaweed processing facility in Dambulla, where we collaborate with an all-women team in Inamulwa. • Completed our first investment round and met amazing partners, such as Bhanuka Harischandra who has been instrumental in accelerating our progress. • Developed our own line of various value addition seaweed products in house Excited to share what’s next! 🌊 Celebrating Innovation and Impact in Sri Lanka’s Kappaphycus Seaweed Farming 🌿 I am truly honored to have been a mentor and consultant to the inspiring journey of Seashore Garden, a venture co-founded by my friends Bhanuka Harischandra, Shawn Senarath, Dasun D. Silva and Malika Sugathapala. One of the biggest challenges in animal conservation is finding sustainable alternatives for communities reliant on industries like poaching or illegal fishing. What truly inspires me are the organizations that address this issue by providing meaningful, alternative livelihoods. These initiatives not only protect wildlife but also uplift people’s lives, creating a lasting, positive impact on both the environment and local communities. During college, I wrote an assignment on the shark fin trade, exploring the complexities of this issue and the crucial need for solutions that balance human livelihoods with conservation efforts. This topic has stayed with me, and I’m deeply passionate about becoming part of the solution. Project Hiu, a non-profit organization, stands out as a powerful example of this approach. They provide sustainable alternatives to the shark fin trade, offering economic opportunities for local communities through eco-tourism, while simultaneously working to protect sharks and preserve marine ecosystems.
