When Ocean Basket introduced whole seabream to our menu two summers ago, we sold out in six weeks. This unexpected success led to a game-changing collaboration with ABALOBI – a local organisation empowering small-scale fishing communities through fair pricing, technology and sustainable practices. Since early 2023, we've purchased almost 28 tons of Cape Bream from these communities, paying R1.5-million directly to the fishers. This fair and consistent compensation ensures a stable income, enabling fishers to support their families and maintain their traditional, low-impact fishing methods. Our partnership has enhanced food security and preserved cultural heritage. By securing a reliable demand for Cape Bream—a sustainable, green-listed species—we're fostering a brighter, more resilient future for traditional fishers. We believe in the power of collective effort. Together with ABALOBI, we're making a real, lasting impact on the lives of many, showcasing how responsible business practices can drive positive change. #WorldOceanDay
I am bursting with pride. Marco Tavares Coelho continues to do incredible work that demonstrates love and respect to the oceans and fishers. 🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🦐🦐🦐🦐🎣🎣🎣🎣
Fantastic update! Two great South African organisations showcasing fisheries management and sustainable seafood.
I recently enjoyed this sea bream at the Ocean Basket on Highland Park here in Harare Zimbabwe over lunch with a friend. I love fish on any day 🤍
Well done!
