2024 may not be a typical election year, but many saw this coming. Political polarization has intensified within our two-party paradigm, and American voters are increasingly concerned that this system might eventually break, threatening our democracy. And they might be right. Election reform groups are working diligently to change the mechanisms governing our voting system, aiming to alleviate the toxicity that having only two options has created. Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) offers a solution, allowing more people to vote for more candidates without the fear of the "spoiler" effect narrative often propagated by corporate media. But, will Americans be ready for the outcomes of Ranked Choice Voting and open primaries? Will a strong coalition of independent political parties emerge to disrupt the duopoly, or will the two-party system cling to power as long as it can? The supercharged rhetoric of our presidential elections mirrors the supercharged powers of the modern presidency (and that's a bad thing). So much power is concentrated in executive branch agencies means that every change in presidential administration threatens a wholesale remaking of scads of policy questions. If we rigorously abide by the Constitution and insist that only Congress make law, there would be far less at stake in any given election. This was an interesting read and certainly an interesting time in politics. The ostensible basis for democratic governance is the idea that voting represents an accurate picture of the will of the people. The tactics the democrats used to win 2020, and seem to be using in 2024, will lead to effective mass disenfranchisement and consequently cause the federal government to have a legitimacy crisis.
