Check out the key ideas about the role of Leaders' Character in ESG Strategies that we learned from the North Atlantic Roundtables on Leadership organized by the Ian O. Ihnatowycz Institute for Leadership in partnership with The Long Run Institute. One of our conclusions in this article (with Oana Branzei and Kimberley Young Milani) is that leaders see ESG Strategies throuhg different analogies: as a game with rules and referees, as positions with a few making the majority of the decisions, and as the prioritization of different types of capitals. The reliance on these lenses depends on the activation of different character dimensions. Accountants are often accused of focusing solely on the numbers – but we recognise the importance of integrating sustainable leadership practices into our management. Sustainable leadership asks us to commit to long-term thinking and responsible decision-making by prioritising ethical governance, support for the community and environmentally friendly internal policies. However, I think truly sustainable management goes beyond ESG policies. This approach to leadership needs to be something that you can sustain, which means that it has to be authentic and based on a genuine desire to progress both the business and your team. Without that, you’ll lack the strong base from which all other ESG objectives are achieved. For me, this means open communication, sharing knowledge across different teams, and recognising each team member as an individual.
