About us
Ivey’s Ian O. Ihnatowycz Institute for Leadership (www.ivey.ca/leadership) is a global leader in research, teaching, and outreach on character leadership. Through its scholarship, it seeks to elevate the importance of character alongside competence in the practice of leadership, reveal character’s critical impact on judgment and decision-making, and its powerful influence on well-being and sustained excellence. Its work is integrated into Ivey’s degree and Executive Education programs so students are able to develop their own leader character; while through a wide range of initiatives, the Institute engages with leaders in the public, private, and not-for-profit sectors so they may enhance their individual effectiveness and embed character leadership into their organization’s policies, practices and culture. At its heart, Ihnatowycz Leadership is committed to developing global citizens who have strength of character, strive to make a difference, and contribute to the flourishing of teams, organizations, communities, and societies.

I wanted to write about imposter syndrome since it is something I get asked about quite a bit in our workshops on character. Developing character can go a long way to mitigating it!
Imposter syndrome affects many professionals, leading to self-doubt and feelings of inadequacy despite evident success. In her latest Forbes article, Ivey's Mary Crossan discusses how developing character can help combat these feelings. She says, "by developing character, individuals can build the resilience, confidence, and sense of purpose needed to confront, neutralize, and dispose of imposter syndrome." Ivey's Mary Crossan spoke to The Globe and Mail about how important it is to consider character when hiring new recruits - even when hiring future NHLers. Crossan has worked with Ron Francis of both the Carolina Hurricanes and now the Seattle Kraken to help the organizations and players understand and develop their character. She says, “most organizations don’t understand what character is, let alone how to develop it. So my job was not only to help them see what it was but then to have an interview or conversation that starts to reveal it in a player." Congratulations to the 40 MBA students who just completed the award-winning Leadership Under Fire course! Thank you Gerard Seijts for leading another transformative experience for these students.
The fabulous MBA 2025 cohort for Leadership under Fire returned this morning from their leadership character development course - a fabulous 4-plus days. The weather, 40 MBA students, and the Pathfinder Leadership Associates Inc. staff made this serial most, most memorable. A polar dive in Lake Huron and a nice dinner capped off a great week.
