Last week I was at the #H2TechExpo in Hamburg with Florian Falcke catching up with clients and getting to know new people within the #cleanmolecules space. I've been to a lot of hydrogen conferences over the past 3 years and it sometimes feels like its hard to say or hear anything new about this emerging sector. But here are two themes running through our conversations in Hamburg:   The RFNBO rules are a mess. Having been made with the best of intent - to ensure electrolysis doesn't set back the decarbonisation of the power system - they are doing little to achieve this objective but doing a lot to delay investment decisions and increase complexity in projects that are already fiendishly difficult to finance. Additionality is no longer endorsed by major EU players that are subject to it (Germany) Developers are not clear on what a 'direct link' between a renewable generator and an electrolyser means Developers are not clear on treatment of grid power that is not fully RFNBO compliant, but could be partially RFNBO compliant under 2018/2001 Temporal correlation does not send a useful market signal unless projects have the flexibility to turn down, which they don't have much of given the slow progress of developing salt caverns The technology value chain that goes into this sector is immense. A while back I heard an electrolyser producer say "there are 1500 parts in an electrolyser and if one of them fails, the whole thing fails". I did not appreciate that until this, my first visit to a more tech-oriented expo. These systems are an impressive jigsaw of membranes, compressors, heat exchangers, power units, control systems, sensors, monitors, all enabled by more basic but nonetheless highly tailored components: valves, wires, catalysts, meshes, coils, sealants, steel, plastics and precious metals. Seeing all these deconstructed around the various expo stands gives a different appreciation for this complexity versus a site visit.

During European Hydrogen Week in Brussels, we participated in a workshop titled “Hydrogen for mobility and residential applications: safety and permitting approaches around Europe” organized by the HYPOPproject. This interactive session explored how we can increase public trust in hydrogen. 💧 Cefmof is already actively working on this topic: we shared our insights from Jyväskylä, particularly the H2 exhibition at the Aalto2 Museum Centre and the hydrogen pizza oven at the “Hydrogen, Light, and Power” event. As part of a thought-provoking roundtable discussion with Joana Fonseca from Hydrogen Europe, Tomoho Umeda from Hydrogen Poland and Mattia Miglietta from Environment Park, Esa Eerola emphasized the importance of community-focused initiatives in advancing hydrogen adoption.
