NEW WEBSITE LAUNCH It's with great pride that I share my new website with my LinkedIn community. 🎉 When I set up The Experience Business in 2012, no one was talking about Audience Experience Design and some thought me a bit mad to set up a company that focussed on all things #audienceexperience. 12 years on and it is fast rising up the agenda of many arts and cultural organisations, though the specific skills and mindsets required to drive it are not yet mainstreaming. So I persist, and my new website offers some lovely peeks into the work I do in this field. Since then, my work has grown and evolved in exciting and unforeseen ways: - working with #curators on human-centred exhibition conceptualisation and #exhibitiondesign - introducing #designthinking processes into #capitaldevelopment - co-developing #brandexperiences and #brandworlds with major performing arts venues - working with performing artists to explore how their purpose, practice and audience experience inter-relate as a means to support informed risk taking - and running a number of flagship #communityengagement programmes that places the participant experience front and centre At the heart of all this is a profound belief that the true value of the arts and cultural sector resides in the human experience of everything it is and does. This being the case, audience experience is a strategic consideration, and so must be intentionally conceptualised, designed and managed. I'll be writing more about this as I embark for the first-time in a bit of blogging. Just wrapped up an inspiring meeting with the team at Fresh Arts (Daral, Angela, and Julia Barbosa Landois), learning about their annual Fresh Arts Summit. This event has been a big asset for Houston's creative community since 2019, focusing on entrepreneurial skills and community building for visual and performing artists. It got me thinking about the bigger picture of creative professional development in Houston: 💗 How can we expand support for our diverse creative workforce beyond traditional arts? 🔌 What opportunities exist to bridge the gap between creative fields and other industries? 🔗 How might we leverage Houston's unique position as a hub for energy, medicine, and space to drive innovation in creative sectors? I believe there's immense potential in broadening our approach to creative professional development: 🤝 Cross-industry collaborations could spark new career paths and innovations 🛠️ Enhanced creative workforce development could attract and retain top talent in Houston 💫 A more integrated creative community could drive economic growth and cultural vibrancy What are your thoughts on the state of creative professional development in Houston? Funding Round Now Open Round 1, 2025 The Ian Potter Cultural Trust - Emerging Artist Grants program offers grants of up to $15,000 to assist talented emerging and early-career artists in taking up professional development opportunities, usually overseas. The Trust's Emerging Artist Grants program funds nationally and supports individual artists practising across the spectrum of the arts, from visual arts to community radio, design to literature, conservation of cultural heritage to circus arts. https://lnkd.in/gVAgp7NK

The ability of brands to make people laugh was in the spotlight more this year at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity than ever before. Not just because as humans we're yearning for work that lightens the mood and gives us a break from the constant reminders of just how shit everything is right now, but because the festival added 'Use of Humour' to the Culture & Context subcategory across all Lions of the festival. So, I was paying extra close attention to the work that cut through to our collective funny bones... and I want to single one out in particular. As the Monday night awards were being dished out for the Audio & Radio Lions category, there was one entry that was played in the Lumière theatre that had the whole audience in stitches - Otter for Sandoz Deutschland. This Juneteenth, I’m celebrating a different kind of freedom—the freedom to choose myself. I've always wanted to be a creative professional, and I achieved that dream, by rising to the role of an Art Director. It's a point of pride for me as a self-taught artist and designer who was regularly told to "choose something else". However, the full-time office environment brought back memories of high school bullying, with its office politics and hierarchies. It was a place where I couldn't truly thrive. As a creative, I learned and grew immensely in the last year, but I began to doubt my abilities and passion over time. Despite my personal successes—landing big clients, creating music videos and horror movies, organizing art and music events, and community organizing movements—my skills and achievements suddenly seemed irrelevant in this new environment. The goalposts kept moving, and the rug was constantly being pulled from under my feet. My experience as a business owner, which once made me stand out in the hiring process, no longer mattered as an employee. The skillset that got me here was now seen as inadequate. So, I took a step back. I chose to switch back to freelance work, allowing me to tend to my garden, get adequate sleep, and prioritize my health without sacrificing my career. I no longer want to carry the weight of microaggressions alongside a heavy workload. Advertising is hard enough - why make it harder for the marginalized individuals in your agencies? I'm seeking opportunities that value me as a whole person, not just as a quota to fill or a box to check for diversity. A recent New York Times article highlighted the lack of diversity in advertising, noting that Black professionals often stay at agency jobs for two years or less. This resonated with me deeply and pointed to an industry-wide problem being pitched to me as "individual failings". I know there are people out there doing the work, so here is my lighthouse!
