New research from the University of South Australia reveals that it only takes 15 minutes a day—coupled with a touch of gamification—to significantly improve employee health and productivity! 🏋️♂️💼 The 15 Minute Challenge, a 6-week workplace wellness program involving over 11,500 participants from 73 companies across Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, shows promising results: ✅ 95% of participants met or exceeded recommended physical activity guidelines. ✅ Average daily physical activity increased by 12 minutes (adding up to 85 extra minutes per week). ✅ Participants reported significant improvements in fitness (14%), energy levels (12%), overall health (8%), sleep quality (8%), and mood (7.1%). Why does it work? The challenge uses gamification—team competitions, activity tracking, and celebrating achievements—to motivate employees. It’s fun, accessible, and, most importantly, it helps build long-term healthy habits. Dr Ben Singh, lead researcher, explains: “The 15-minute goal acts as an easy entry point for those who are sedentary, reducing barriers and encouraging regular exercise. Most participants go beyond the minimum goal, moving closer to or surpassing national recommendations.” Professor Carol Maher adds: “Friendly competition and team accountability are key. Do workplace wellness programmes actually work? The literature indicates, yes, they can be effective, but they need to be grounded in evidence along with support from the organisational culture in order to achieve the success. Well received wellness programmes are likely to be something the staff have a high interest in, and are motivated to learn something about. When staff can engage with the facilitator and feel like they are walking away with valuable information that might benefit them personally, not surprisingly, effectiveness increases.😊 With the huge public interest in gut health, but the sheer amount of overwhelming (and misinformation) content out there, there is a clear need and benefit for providing education and guidance to employees in this space. Given science is now very well informed of the significant role that gut health can play in our mood, sleep, levels of energy and longer term health risks - it is time that we incorporate this into corporate culture.
