From now on you can address me as Master of Science 😎 I am thrilled to announce the successful completion of my Master’s project in Nanoscience, titled "Exploring the Influence of Nanostructures on Fibroblastic Response", under the guidance of Senior Researcher Ph.D. Morten Foss at Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center - Aarhus University (iNANO). This project focused on how nanostructures, such as nanotopographies, influence fibroblast behavior - an area with potential applications in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. While it was exciting to uncover insights into how specific nanostructures promote cell proliferation, the most valuable takeaways were learning to navigate the complexities of working in a research setting. From collaborating with an amazing research group to tackling obstacles and navigating uncharted territory, this journey taught me the importance of perseverance, teamwork, and adaptability in science. This milestone would not have been possible without the guidance of my supervisor, Morten Foss, whose mentorship has been invaluable. I’m also deeply grateful to my friends and family for their encouragement and support along the way. ❤️ I am eager to carry these experiences forward as I explore opportunities to contribute to the exciting field of nanoscience and its many applications. I am currently seeking new challenges and opportunities where I can apply my skills and continue to grow professionally. New York University has been recognized as a Rising Star by Nature Index and was ranked #8 research institution in North America—up from #25 in 2016—based on increase in articles in top science journals. “Our designation as a Rising Star and top-10 ranking is yet another proof-point of the growth and momentum of NYU’s research enterprise; the high-caliber and impactful work our researchers undertake each day in their labs; and the University’s increased commitment to science, technology, and the generation of knowledge,” says Stacie Grossman Bloom, PhD, NYU’s vice provost for research and chief research officer. One of the studies that was highlighted came from #NYUTandon Professor of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Jin Kim Montclare. This research was published in Macromolecules on gel-forming protein molecules, which can inform developing new gel materials for biomedical applications such as tissue engineering and drug delivery. This time in our series #PortraitOfAMathematician 📸 our new committee member: Beata Ondrusova from Johannes Kepler Universität Linz. About her work: I am a postdoctoral researcher at JKU Linz, where I use mathematical methods to address various biomedical challenges. My research primarily focuses on advancing our understanding and treatment of medical conditions with a particular emphasis on cardiac disorders and personalized hemodynamic modelling. The main goal of our research is to enhance patient outcomes by developing personalized solutions. About ideas to support women and non-binary mathematicians: I would like to help create a supportive environment for women and non-binary mathematicians by engaging in networking groups that promote the exchange of experiences. Furthermore, I believe that it’s important to show that pursuing a career in mathematics opens doors to diverse fields like physics, biology, and more. By highlighting the various applications and opportunities available, we can help them see that mathematics is not only enjoyable but also highly versatile. I was recently interviewed by Elisabeth Pain of Science Magazine. The circumstances were not exactly happy. EuroScience recently initiated bankruptcy prodeedings. I served on EuroScience's Governing Board. EuroScience was an association that aimed to represent individual researchers in activities to strengthen the bonds between science and society. The main focus of EuroScience was the EuroScience Open Forum. ESOF is a conference that offers the chance for discussions to take place across the whole spectrum of stakeholders in science in its widest definition: Early-career researchers, science journalists, policy-makers, senior researchers, citizen scientists, research funders and many more. In 2018, as part of work originating in the Marie Curie Alumni Association, I ran a session at ESOF on Researcher Mental Health. Bringing a team (Katia Levecque, Gábor Kismihók, Francisco Valente Gonçalves, Susan Guthrie, Mark Robinson) together to run this session and the hugely positive response it received, convinced us to do more significant and sustained work through the ReMO COST Action Researcher Mental Health. In the weeks after the conference, one of our speakers was interviewed by Science Magazine (https://lnkd.in/ebZX9GzM ) and another by Nature (https://lnkd.in/ee2kHr2S ). In the years after the conference, we secured funding from the COST Association - European Cooperation in Science and Technology that allowed us to build a solid structure for our further activities (https://lnkd.in/e3JdZdZk ). ESOF provided us and many others with a truly "open forum" for engaging a very wide range of stakeholders and engaging in meaningful discussion. It provided an incomparable forum for networking. This year ESOF 2024 will take place in Katowice in June and we have a short amount of time to ensure the survival of ESOF after 2024. It would be a shame if Europe lost ESOF, which is a conference that means a lot to so many of us. https://lnkd.in/ezVapsuZ
