Last Friday, the CiBB Meeting brought together our research community for an inspiring day of scientific exchange, collaboration and knowledge sharing. Held at the Teatro Municipal da Lousã, this event highlighted the research carried out in recent years, promoting interdisciplinary links and highlighting the innovative spirit that drives our work. From stimulating presentations to interesting discussions, the CiBB Meeting demonstrated the power of collaboration in approaching complex challenges in biomedicine and biotechnology. O projeto Bio-Mind, que integra o professor do #DEI, Joel P. Arrais, e a aluna de doutoramento, Anuschka Silva-Spínola, em parceria com o Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology e o CiBB, está entre os vencedores do Concurso de Projetos de Inovação UC by Unidade Local de Saúde (ULS) de Coimbra! 🏆 🩻 Esta iniciativa inovadora utiliza inteligência artificial e análise de dados biológicos para auxiliar na tomada de decisão clínica e no diagnóstico precoce de doenças. Combinando a ciência de dados com tecnologia de ponta, visa melhorar a prestação de cuidados de saúde, tornando os processos mais rápidos e precisos. O projeto premiado baseia-se no trabalho de doutoramento de Anuschka Spínola, "Aplicação de um modelo computacional preditivo de biomarcadores na conversão para a doença de Alzheimer", desenvolvido em colaboração pelo CISUC, CNC-UC e CiBB. 📋 Parabéns! 👐

✨ Highlights from Last Thursday! ✨ On December 12th, the EXCELScIOR project ERA-Chair team gave an engaging and interactive workshop, “Meta-Research in Sports Science”, at the Faculty of Sports Science, Universidade de Coimbra (#FCDEFUC). 🎤 Key Highlights: 💡 Tracey Weissgerber, EXCELScIOR #TeamLeader, delivered an inspiring talk on “Meta-Research: The Science of Improving Research Culture and Practice.” 🌍 Inês A. T. A., EXCELScIOR #Researcher, explored “Open Science and Responsible Research Training for Early-Stage Researchers.” 📊 Teresa Cunha-Oliveira, EXCELScIOR #Researcher, shared insights on “Monitoring Responsible Research Practices Through Interactive Dashboards.” 🔗 EXCELScIOR Coordinator, Paulo J. Oliveira, introduced the project’s mission to foster excellence in #ResearchPractices, bringing #MetaResearch principles to the forefront of #SportsScience. This interactive workshop brought together researchers and doctoral students from various domains of sports science and meta-research, creating a vibrant space for dialogue and collaboration. #CNCResearcher Bruno Manadas (local coordinator), together with Nuno Madeira and Joel Arrais, are part of the European VOLABIOS project (Validation and Comparative Multi-Omics Benchmarking of Fluid-Derived Volatilomics Biomarkers for the Prevention and Early Detection of Schizophrenia) in Coimbra. This project aims to revolutionize the diagnosis and treatment of schizophrenia, a chronic mental illness that affects around 1% of the world's population, is among the 15 leading causes of disability worldwide and reduces life expectancy by 10-15 years. 🌍🔬 VOLABIOS project launching on 1 January 2025, focuses on developing innovative diagnostic tools using biomarkers, mobile spectrometry and artificial intelligence. By analyzing extensive medical records and monitoring more than 3000 patients across Europe, the project seeks to identify early biochemical signs of schizophrenia, enabling accurate and early diagnosis and improving outcomes for patients.
