Enabling researchers to set up their own interdisciplinary research networks. Funded by the European Union.
About us
The COST Association is a not-for-profit international association under Belgian law. It is in charge of funding, organising, managing and promoting COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) activities. COST is an EU-funded programme that enables researchers to set up their interdisciplinary research networks known as COST Actions. We provide funds for organising conferences, meetings, training schools, short scientific exchanges or other networking activities in a wide range of scientific topics. By creating open spaces where people and ideas can grow, we unlock the full potential of science.

Did you know that researchers from South Africa can participate in COST Action activities like like Training Schools and Short-Term Scientific Missions as well as joining our research networks as Working Group members or as part of a network of proposers for a new COST Action? South Africa has a special Partner Member status with COST and the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSI) can provide seed funding for the travel costs of South African researchers traveling to Europe for COST Action activities. In 2024 we celebrated 5 years of this partnership. Thanks to Marena Manley, Haly Holmes, Albert Lysko, and Sebastian Helmut Orth for sharing their experiences so far. 🔹 News on 5 years of our partnership: https://lnkd.in/ev9xBsah 🔹 Learn more about South Africa as a COST Partner Member: https://lnkd.in/e6QEwJWd 🔹 How to apply for seed funding: https://lnkd.in/eKKF7EdR With ESASTAP, Katalin Alföldi, Anita Mnisi, Tugela Matubatuba, Ntombi Mchuba, and Eudy Mabuza

We are thrilled to launch our latest Cross-Cutting Activity (CCA) on career development for young researchers. This unique network of researchers, career advisory experts, and stakeholder organisations will work together to achieve more balanced brain circulation. The project dives into the need to improve career development conditions to attract and retain the best researchers in Europe. We will explore career advisory and support services, building a young researcher community in COST Actions, and gender equality and inclusiveness implications. There are many words of thanks to those in the COST community who have helped launch this CCA, special mentions go to our CCA Co-Chairs Nicola Dengo and Joanna Rutkowska, and Working Group Chairs Ivana Herglová, Patricia Clement, Mostafa Moonir Shawrav, Naoimh O'Connor, Ahmed Rassili, Stellamarina Donato, Adna Ašić, and Verity Elston. We are looking forward to this 2-year collaboration! With COST's Judith Litjens, Salvatore Grimaldi, Ronald de Bruin and stakeholders Eurodoc, EU Science, Research and Innovation, OECD - OCDE, Vitae, European University Association, Science Europe, Marie Curie Alumni Association, Young Academy of Europe, and ICORSA. #COSTactions #ScienceWithoutBorders #YoungResearchers #ResearchCareers

Every COST Action has a Grant Holder Manager, working hard behind the scenes to ensure the best possible financial and administrative stewardship of their research network. With some COST Actions exceeding 300+ participants, successful management is no easy task so it was a pleasure to welcome new Grant Holders to our recent COST Academy workshop. We delved deeper into the COST financial rules and the use of e-COST, the online grant management tool of COST. The workshops are interactive, participatory, and provide an opportunity for Grant Holders to get to know each other as they embark on their 4 year Action journey. In a statement published today, COST’s Scientific Committee urges the European Commission, European Parliament, and Member States to increase the budget to fund at least 50% more COST Actions and reinforce COST's role as a capacity builder. Our Scientific Committee is an independent body comprising high-level experts appointed by their Member State. The statement highlights the growing demand for participation in ongoing and funding of new COST Actions, a demand that cannot be met without financial reinforcement. It also emphasises COST’s ability to bring together researchers and innovators, especially young researchers and those in less-connected countries or regions.
