In the past 20 years, the field of physical therapy has experienced remarkable advancements, transforming the way we approach rehabilitation and patient care. As a doctor of physical therapy, I've witnessed firsthand the evolution of our profession, from transforming into a doctoral profession to adopting evidence-based practices that optimize patient outcomes. In addition to the remarkable advancements and evidence-based practices, the field of physical therapy has also seen a proliferation of expertise and subspecialties. Physical therapists now specialize in areas such as sports medicine, orthopedics, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, clinical electrophysiology, geriatrics, pediatrics, neurology, pelvic health, and wound care. These specialized areas allow us to tailor treatment plans to meet the unique needs of each patient, whether they're recovering from a sports injury, managing chronic conditions, or seeking rehabilitation after surgery. Recently, physical therapists have become the frontline primary care for neuromuscular disorders with the Department of Defense (DoD). With our advanced training and expertise in musculoskeletal and neurological conditions, physical therapists play a vital role in providing comprehensive care to helping overcome injuries, recover from surgeries, improve function, and enhance overall well-being. This integration of physical therapy into primary care option underscores the importance of our profession in promoting health and resilience across diverse populations. Let's continue to elevate the role of physical therapy and its impact on individuals, communities, and healthcare systems. #DoctorofPhysicalTherapy #PhysicalTherapy #Musculoskeletal

What is a Trauma Center? 🏥 In the direst moments, trauma centers are equipped to care for the most severe injuries. 🏥 While emergency departments treat illnesses and injuries, Trauma Centers handle the most life or limb-threatening injuries, including car crashes, brain injuries, serious falls, assaults, gunshot wounds, and severe burns. 🏥 Trauma Center resources vary by center level and can include pre-hospital providers, trauma surgeons, emergency medicine physicians, anesthesiologists, neurosurgeons, orthopaedic surgeons, radiologists, and trauma nurses. 🏥 Trauma Centers ensure trauma patients have priority access to diagnostic tests which may include CT scans, ultrasound, and life-saving blood transfusion for the most critically injured. #TraumaCenter #TraumaCare

As Eye Care Professionals (ECPs), it's crucial to understand the significance of #ControlOverCorrection in myopia management. By recommending the right approaches, we can help slow the progression of myopia and protect children's visions. Here are three ways ECPs can ensure effective myopia control for their patients: ▪ Managing Lifestyle Factors: ECPs can incorporate discussions on lifestyle factors into conversations with parents and their children about myopia management. This includes tips such as maximizing time outside, limiting near work aside from schoolwork, ensuring regular eye examinations, and limiting screen time. ▪ Use Axial Length Measurement Tools: Whilst measuring refractive error is a common optometry knowledge, axial length education can provide extra clinical information especially since the consequences of myopia- related pathology are significantly linked to axial length. ▪ Ensuring Early Myopia Control: Correcting myopia can only help patients see clearer but not slow down its progression, providing options that help to control myopia progression at early stages can help patients benefit in the long term. For example, MiSight® 1 day has been proven to slow the progression of myopia in children aged 8–12 years at the initiation of treatment. By emphasizing the significance of control over correction and recommending suitable strategies, ECPs can make a positive impact on their patients' eye health and vision for the long term. In regions where the #SLP profession is still developing, #otolaryngologists pick up the slack of managing #voicedisorders. The issue is that the training they receive for #dysphonia may not meet practice needs. We found a #dunningkruger effect where #ENTs felt more confident despite reporting poor coverage of specialist voice topics during their training. #research #speechpathology #speechlanguagepathology #speechtherapy #speechlanguagetherapy #survey

"It's probably just musculoskeletal." I heard it for years as a clinician — working in the musculoskeletal field. The quiet part is, "And so it's kind of out of my hands." "Musculoskeletal" is a big black box in medicine. many non-MSK clinicians don't feel comfortable dealing with it. It's true even for emergency medicine, as this study reminds us. https://lnkd.in/d98asMNx And this has implications for scientific writing about "MSK". Because the building blocks of knowledge in #msk are a bit different. Way more biomechanics, distinct imaging studies, a functional understanding of musculoskeletal anatomy. Related topics in pain physiology, interventional and surgical management, rehabilitation. Ah. The air I breathe. I've been living in it and writing about it for 2 decades. Do you need a medical writer who understands: - how a spinal implant affords coupled motion? And why it's functionally important? - the evolving role of biologics in therapies for musculoskeletal conditions? - how a patient's femoral intramedullary rod works? And how to explain it to them? If we haven't met: Hi, I'm Peter Stein. After my training as a spine specialist, I went on to research user-device interaction. All that time, I was really meant to be a medical writer. So here I am. From data, I create an accurate story you won't want to put down. Message me at stein.pj AT gmail.com or right here in LI.

Keeping an Eye on... Adult Myopia It is not always apparent to parents that when we manage and treat their child with myopia, the goal is not merely to avoid the need for thick glasses. As ophthalmologist and optometrists, what we are really trying to do is to prevent problems developing 20 - 30 years down the road. This article very succinctly describes the issues that can arise when adults have high myopia (above 500-600 degrees). They run the risks of progressive, pathological myopia, myopic macular degeneration, glaucoma and retinal detachments, etc. And unlike childhood myopia, where we now have strong evidence-based treatments (low-dose atropine, myopia control glasses, exposure to outdoor play), there are no treatments to prevent any of these complications from happening in the highly myopic adult. In some sense, their future has already been determined. So when Prof Seang Mei Saw says that in the next few decades - - 80% of the adult population in Sg will be myopic - 15% will have high myopia (from 6% currently) - 10% will have pathological myopia (from 4% now) ... it is cause for concern. So what can be done for highly myopic adults (like myself 🥲) ? If you have the means, get your eyes screened for some of these problems. There does not appear to be any consensus as to when to start, but 40 years old seems to be the number commonly used. Get checked for glaucoma and retinal issues. And as Dr Donny Hoang advised, get help if you suddenly experience a rush of floaters, flashes, or a drop in vision, no matter your degree of myopia. #ophthalmology #opthalmologist #optometry #optometrist #Singapore #healthcare #medicine #myopia #childhoodmyopia #lasik After 20 years as a cornea and refractive surgeon at the SNEC, I am now embarking on a new journey in private practice. But my mission remains the same - to improve the vision and quality of life of my patients, and to advance the field of eyecare through science education, innovation and collaboration.

John Elliotson (October 29) was a prominent London physician known for his pioneering work in mesmerism and hypnotic anesthesia. He co-founded the Phrenological Society of London and promoted the scientific study of "animal magnetism," asserting it as a distinct physical force. In the 1830s, Elliotson successfully applied mesmerism to perform pain-free surgeries at University College Hospital, laying the groundwork for future psychological methods in pain management and influencing the development of hypnosis in medicine. #hod #histortoftheday #psychologyhistory #clinicalpsychology #psychologymajor #psychologystudent #socialpsychology #developmentalpsychology #appliedpsychology #psychology
