🐟 📢 Some key insights from our recent workshop on "doing no significant harm" in Norwegian Aquaculture in Bergen! The workshop, held on October 15, 2024 and organised by our partners from NORCE Norwegian Research Centre in collaboration with the University of Aberdeen, gathered 46 stakeholders from local scientists, policymakers, students, industry, funders and not-for-profit organisations to explore sustainable practices under the "do no significant harm principle" while aiming for 50% of animal protein from farmed fish by 2050! Insights: - Need for considering circularity: Incl. waste management ♻️ - Novel feed ingredients: necessary to ensure the growth of the aquaculture 🐟 - Emphasizing quality over production scale - Public awareness: Improving consumer and community awareness around ethical practices in aquaculture is essential 👏 Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/eYgv7NTb

New Scientific Paper! I am thrilled to announce the publication of the article: "The vulnerability of observers – An evaluation of observer programs welfare and working conditions policies" by Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS), University of Wollongong Innovation Campus, North Wollongong, Fishlistic, and Seafoodmatter now available in the Marine Science - Elsevier Journal! The aim of this paper is to assess whether observer programmes fulfil their responsibilities to protect the health, safety, and welfare of observers and their living conditions while onboard fishing vessels. This analysis was done by developing a specific observer benchmark tool for reviewing observer programmes. The results of this research found that, on average, assessed observer programmes demonstrate good performance. 📢#MeetOurPartners! To kick us off in our partners showcasing series is Centro Interdisciplinar de Investigação Marinha e Ambiental (CIIMAR). Translation to English is nterdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research. Who are we? CIIMAR, part of the University of Porto, excels in ocean and coastal research and training. It integrates physical, chemical, and biological insights to address environmental and human impacts. CIIMAR advances marine resource management, aquaculture, and biotechnological applications, tackling challenges like seafood quality, drug development, water quality, and ecosystem preservation. It provides innovative solutions for sustainable fisheries, oil spill mitigation, and ocean literacy. Role in the project: ✅ CIIMAR takes the lead in WP1, ensuring the effective organization and supervision of the INNOECOFOOD project. Responsibilities include coordinating activities, monitoring targets, facilitating communication between partners and the EC, and ensuring ethical, environmental, and gender considerations are addressed. ✅ Plays a pivotal role in WP6, dedicated to developing a diverse range of non-conventional value-added food products derived from fish waste, spirulina, and insects. ✅ Leads the tasks outlined in WP7, which focus on ensuring the quality and safety of products. CIIMAR team will also conduct evaluations of the environmental impact of fish, spirulina, and insect chains through Life Cycle Assessment methodologies. ✅ Finally, CIIMAR leads WP9, dedicated to Ethics Requirements that the project must comply with. #INNOECOFOOD #MeetOurPartners #agroecologicalfoods #sustainableaquaculture

How do we encourage and support native wild pollinators? Most of our food such as fruit, nuts and seeds depend on animal mediated pollination, as do most plants. Introduced honeybees are the dominant managed pollinator in Australia, but many of our pollinator-dependent crops are also visited by native wild pollinators. Key to encouraging, supporting and conserving pollinators for healthy and sustainable food production is not only food resources like nectar and pollen, but also suitable habitat for them to nest and live. Find out more from Dr Amy-Maree Gilpin, Lecturer, Ecological Interactions Research Team, School of Science, Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment, one of three presenters at NRM RA’s Biosecurity and Bees webinar, Tuesday 21st May 2024 12.30pm – 2pm. Thank you to all the smiling participants at this week's ShapingBio workshop on bioeconomy policy & governance. The ShapingBio project aims at accelerating #bioeconomy innovation in the EU. How policy governs the development of bioeconomy on national and regional levels makes the difference! The goal of the workshop was to discuss how to address and overcome three major challenges in bioeconomy policy and governance: 1) National coordination of bioeconomy policy, presented by Gabriel Däßler from Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI 2) Governance of regulation and authorisation in emerging sectors, such as sustainable aquaculture, presented by Karolina Granja from SUBMARINER Network for Blue Growth EEIG 3) How to foster regional bioeconomy engagement, presented by Dr. Noha Mahmoud from Teagasc

THE EU'S COMMON AGRICULTURAL POLICY CAN MAKE A FUNDAMENTAL CONTRIBUTION TO THE HEALING OF EUROPE'S CLIMATE The European Alliance for Regenerative Agriculture (EARA) has published a Policy Paper that responds to the EU's Common Agricultural Policy. This Policy Paper was initiated by the founding farmers of EARA, as a response to the EU's Common Agricultural Policy. The proponents claim that the perspective of agriculture in Europe lies in strengthening the permanent regeneration and health of ecosystems, and this is missing in the current European agricultural policy. EARA brings the voices of natural resource regeneration experts and pioneers to the center of policy debates on the need to transform European agri-food ecosystems. The entire document is here. https://lnkd.in/eYVCtaPq. We are pleased that our model of holistic regeneration of natural resources (WATER ROTOR) is part of the policy paper. I hope that it will contribute to political decisions that will preserve Europe's food, water, environmental and climate security.
