📢 🎄 #BlueRemediomics 2024 recap! 2024 was a big year for the project. Coming up to Christmas, it's time to reflect on some of our greatest achievements and fun events throughout the year: ⛵ Our partners from EMBL and Fondation Tara Océan successfully completed the 18-month-long #TREC expedition in October this year, gathering 23,000 marine samples and 70,000 terrestrial samples across the entire European Coastline. For #BlueRemediomics, this provides an exciting opportunity to study human impact on coastal ecosystems in unprecedented detail. 🧬 The European Bioinformatics Institute | EMBL-EBI and University of Aberdeen spearheaded conversations on plastic-eating bacteria to boost bioremediation (Nature Magazine Biotechnology) and rules for digital sequence information benefit-sharing across United Nations frameworks (Nature Magazine Communications). 👏 BlueRemediomics partners were busy organising and participating in several workshops this year, the latest one took place NORCE Norwegian Research Centre in Bergen on "doing no significant harm in Norwegian Aquaculture" in collab with University of Aberdeen. 🎙️ We launched the Blue Biome Boffins campaign earlier this year, interviewing different participants in the BlueRemediomics project, from Early Career Scientists to Senior Researchers, to learn more about their role and valuable work in making this project a success. Watch the latest video with Pietro Tedesco from Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn here: https://lnkd.in/dKfvSpWR The BlueRemediomics project feeds into the EDITO - European Digital Twin Ocean together with many other projects that we are in collaboration with, such as MARBLES EU Project, AtlantECO Project, Bluetools and BIOcean5D. Data products from the project are being made publicly available in #MGnify, and flow through established routes to the well-known open-access biodiversity platforms #OBIS and #GBIF. 💙 PS: we are now also on Bluesky - follow us @https://lnkd.in/eT9CzH8s May 2025 be equally as exciting and innovative! Wishing everyone a happy Christmas time 🎄

🌊For science to have an impact, it needs to be communicated. Our partners from ERINN Innovation spent the past 2 days at the #CommOCEAN conference in Malaga, Spain, highlighting some insights & experiences from the BlueRemediomics communication and outreach activities linked to the #TREC expedition organised by Fondation Tara Océan & EMBL. An important role in the BlueRemediomics project is dedicated to increasing public awareness of the ocean #microbiome, its key ecosystem functions, and its potential for novel sustainable products & processes. Building these bridges between science and the public outside the “science bubble” plays an integral role in achieving impact, especially when it comes to concepts that are hard to visualize & grasp such as the ocean microbiome. 🧬 #CommOCEAN2024 provided a unique platform to share experiences and learn about new, unique ways of communicating science. Thanks to the European Marine Board IVZW, Instituto Español de Oceanografía & CSIC for organising!
