Minister Heydon announces €4 million for 21 new policy-focused research projects Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine with special responsibility for research, Martin Heydon TD, today announced €4 million in funding for 21 new policy-focused research projects. The awards arise from the Department’s 2024 Policy and Strategic Studies Research Call. Projects related to bovine tuberculosis, food waste, a national soil strategy and monitoring programme, and attitudes and behaviours towards climate change mitigation are among those awarded funding under the 2024 call. Teagasc scientists (coordinators) to receive funding in this announcement include: Orla Keane (Multi-species swards for herd health) Mohammad Mohammadrezaei (Explaining Climate Change Mitigation Uptake Behaviour Change Dynamics) Karen Daly (A National Soil Strategy and Monitoring Programme for Ireland) Niamh Field (Association between herd bovine tuberculosis breakdown and herd nutritional, metabolic and immune status) Kevin Kilcline (Evaluating National And EU Comprehensive Targets in Organics) Aine Regan (Optimising Biosecurity Risk Communication Pathways for Bovine Tuberculosis) Fiona Thorne (Feasibility Assessment for ORganic Feed Milling (FARM)) Michael Gaffney (Steps towards developing a framework to establish the economic and structural impact of potential invasive plant pest introductions in Irish Agriculture) You can read the full press release in the post below.

Dr Saorla Kavanagh, a Teagasc Research Officer in Farmland Biodiversity talks about her work with ‘mining bees’ in tonight’s episode: “Some farmers are unaware of how easy it is to help biodiversity, and farmers, and their livestock are already helping biodiversity without even realising it. The creation of solitary bee nests is a great example of where farmers can instantly see the results of their labour, if you build it they will come”.

On tonight’s episode (Monday, 9th December) of the television series 10 Things to Know About… Teagasc scientist Dr Shivani Pathania features in an episode on ‘Plastic’. This episode considers the double-edged sword of plastic. Once hailed as a scientific marvel, plastics now pose significant environmental and health risks. This episode investigates the growing evidence of the dangers of chemicals used in plastic manufacturing, such as phthalates and PFAS, and features the researchers tackling these issues with innovative solutions. We also unwrap the latest developments in fossil fuel free bioplastics that aim to reduce both plastic and food waste, offering hope for a more sustainable future.
