The No.1 Question to ask yourself to better understand if your marketing actually works. 🤔 Ask yourself this - "How many leads, enquiries, product sales, or sales calls did you get this month?" If your Answer = NONE You're marketing isn't working! If it's only a handful, then it still isn't working. Remember, if you want to catch good fish, then you need to fish in the right waters. 🐟 And if you're paying thousands to a marketing department, consultant or agency, I'd be reviewing their efforts and cost expenditure. 📈 Plus you might need to rethink the strategy piece and offering to the market, before you commit more money. I’m constantly advocating for developing strong marketing operations that drive your team toward reaching its goals, but how exactly are you supposed to align your marketing efforts with your business goals? I’ve been working in marketing for several years, and I’ve had both successes and failures in my campaigns. It’s all part of the job. However, I’ve found that when marketing operations and business goals go hand in hand, campaigns are significantly more effective. These are some best practices I’ve identified when aligning marketing operations and overall business goals: ➡️ Start by setting realistic business and marketing goals, along with trackable metrics. ➡️ Identify what marketing processes and workflows work best for your company and stick with them. ➡️ Implement a marketing technology stack to streamline processes and train your team accordingly. ➡️ Track your metrics, including KPIs like customer retention, sales, and cost per lead. ➡️ Analyze your results and refine strategies as needed. It may take a few tries to get the balance right, but once you get it, you’ll notice a significant boost to your overall marketing efficiency. We just drafted a 2025 marketing plan for a client including a tactic list, budget and timelines. Many people ask us what a small to mid-sized B2B company should spend on marketing. There's no easy answer because spending depends on a lot of things - age of the business, cash situation, internal resources, etc. There are recommendations online but they range from 2%-40% so not that helpful. We prefer tactical budgeting where we (our clients and Bench Strength) identify and prioritize the marketing activities that will increase sales to the extent that the company is looking for. From there, we price out all of the tactics and see what investments the company is ready to make. It's a longer process but seems to deliver better results: - There's no 'end of the year spending' on unplanned tactics to maintain a budget allocation percentage. - There's an opportunity to invest disproportionately in marketing that will increase sales in a specific segment.
