From Long Island to Bridgeport

As some of you probably know, I am also an avid sailor. In September I will be representing the Netherlands during the inaugural World Championships for the DH Mixed Offshore class. In the coming weeks I will be posting some insights in how sailing and business can be very much alike. And even strengthen one another. Like in leading a business, planning is everything. Without a proper plan that leads to a good strategy, success is merely a coincidence. But with a good plan and strategy, followed by diligent execution, success is much more likely to come your way. But it’s also very important who is there to plan and execute with you. Which is why I am very pleased to be teaming up with Lisa Vos for the Worlds. Together Each Achieves More: TEAM. Strategic planning, followed by execution, complemented with the right team, will always lead to success. Success is not a coincidence: in business and in sailing! North Devon to Spain

Did you know that this week marks the annual International Viking Day, celebrated on the 8th of May? Established in 2013, this day shines a light on Viking culture, renowned for its rich shipbuilding and seafaring legacy. The Vikings played a pivotal role in shaping trade networks during the early Middle Ages, opening many new commercial routes and enhancing the exchange of goods, people, and ideas across the globe, admittedly, some voluntary, some less so.   True sailors, the Vikings voyaged all over Europe, settled Iceland, Greenland, and even reached the shores of North America. Navigating challenging weather conditions at sea requires exceptional skills and unwavering determination even today and imagine doing so back then. They key to the Vikings’ successful global navigation lies in the design and construction of their vessels, carefully crafted to endure the rigors of the open sea.   Their narrow longships, known for shallow drafts, were ideal for both ocean and inland navigation, and wide heavy knarrs, designed for long voyages and transportation of cargo, were built following the clinker technique, a technological revolution for the day, whereby wooden planks were overlapped and riveted, creating a strong yet flexible hulls capable of braving the roughest seas. Another technique in the Viking shipbuilding was a skeletal construction, whereby first a vessel’s frame was built as a guide, with planks then attached to this framework.   Some well-preserved Viking shipbuilding examples include the famous Oseberg Ship in Norway and the trade vessel Ladbyskibet in Denmark. If you haven’t visited them yet, we highly recommend! Fjord1 AS has been awarded the Sogn og Fjordane contract, set to commence in November 2027. This 15-year agreement encompasses the ferry routes Måløy–Husevågøy–Oldeide, Isane–Stårheim, Askvoll–Fure–Værlandet, and Rysjedalsvika–Rutledal–Krakhella, with an option to operate the Askvoll–Gjervik–Fure route. As part of the contract, Fjord1 will implement significant environmental measures. The Stårheim–Isane and Måløy–Oldeide routes are slated for full electric operation, utilizing combustion engines only as a backup. The other routes will adopt partial electric operation. These initiatives are projected to reduce emissions by 70% to 95% compared to current operations. The contract primarily maintains the existing schedule and capacity for the specified ferry routes. The final contract signing is anticipated after the appeal deadline on December 13.
