Last week, while climbing in the Massif du Mont Blanc, I made a safety mistake which endangered the life of my climbing partners. We were climbing the ridge “l’arête à Lolo” at 3,600m altitude next to the Refuge des Cosmiques. I misunderstood the instructions of the guide, did something stupid and instructed my fellow climbers to do the same. Nobody fell, but I caused a substantial safety breach. I feel ashamed. Reflecting upon it, I now understand the set of factors which led to this event. Most importantly, my fellow climbing partners and I have learnt a valuable lesson, and we will never make this error again. In business, as in climbing, learning from one’s mistakes is essential. But learning from others’ mistakes is even better! In two weeks, HIGHGATE will organise an internal “Fuck-ups session” where we will discuss three case studies, analyse our mistakes and the way we delt with them. Being honest and open about our fuck-ups and learning from them is the only way to progress. 

FM’s Flynn Cruiseport team celebrates Massport’s $100M investment to upgrade the cruise terminal and reduce environmental impacts. Sixty million dollars will fund two ship-to-shore power units at Flynn Cruiseport Terminal—the first in New England and a major step toward electrifying ports and cutting emissions from idling ships. The remaining $40M will fund ongoing terminal upgrades to passenger waiting areas and amenities. The yacht market remains as tense as it is divided: while "normal" sport boats are becoming increasingly difficult to sell—primarily due to prices that no longer seem justifiable for the quality and which this customer base does not understand—the market for large yachts, especially in the motor yacht segment, is booming. Therefore, all shipyards must carefully consider whether high prices followed by substantial discounts for quick buyers constitute a viable long-term strategy. I would advocate for transparency and a comprehensible pricing structure. Additionally, particularly in Germany but also in the Mediterranean region (notably in Croatia), significantly or excessively expensive mooring spaces are having a dampening effect on sales. Thus, it is entirely understandable that the first shipyards are beginning to purchase marinas (such as X Yachts or Rügen Yachtbau).
