New Year’s inspiration coming to your feed! #workingmom #returner #founderstories
General Partner at Joyful VC | Ex-Silicon Valley Lobbyist | #1 Bestselling Author | Founder of VWS | Keynote Speaker | Rolling Stone Contributor
This 58 year old CEO turned her diet soda addiction into a $150 million healthy beverage empire. Meet Kara Goldin, founder and former CEO of Hint Inc. Born in Minneapolis and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona, Kara was the youngest of five children. Her father, a food industry manager, and her mother, a department store employee, instilled in her the values of determination and resilience. Kara's entrepreneurial spirit sparked early. At 14, she landed her first job at Alphabet Toys in her hometown. Within months, she excelled so quickly that the store started allowing her to make store-buying decisions. This experience ignited her passion for business. After earning a degree in communications with a minor in finance from Arizona State University in 1989, Kara embarked on a dynamic career. She began at TIME, rising from executive assistant to managing airline circulation. She then moved to CNN, working in advertising sales. Relocating to San Francisco, Kara joined 2Marketing, a startup spun out of Apple. When AOL acquired 2Market, she became Vice President, growing AOL's e-commerce business to about a billion dollars in revenue. After that whirlwind, she decided to step back from her career to raise her family. Kara faced a personal health challenge: getting healthy again after pregnancy. Identifying her addiction to diet sodas as a barrier, she sought a better alternative. That's when genius struck. In 2005, Kara launched Hint Water from her home kitchen, offering a pure and unsweetened flavored water. Her mission: provide a healthy alternative to sugary beverages. But the journey wasn't easy. Kara faced skepticism from investors who doubted the market for flavored water. At the time, everybody was obsessed with Diet Coke. Undeterred, she bootstrapped Hint, securing placements in major retailers and Silicon Valley offices, including Google, Meta, and LinkedIn. By 2011, Kara was named to Fortune's Most Powerful Women Entrepreneurs. The next year, she was named to EY's Entrepreneurial Winning Women. Soon, investors came knocking. By 2020, Hint closed its Series D with $25 million, led by Springboard Growth Capital. Under Kara's leadership, Hint expanded its product line to include Hint Fizz, a carbonated version launched in 2011, and ventured into personal care with a sunscreen product in 2017. Kara’s philosophy is straightforward: "Listen to your gut—it could make you CEO one day." From a kitchen experiment to a revolutionary product that changed how people think about health, Kara’s story exemplifies the power of persistence. Yet, this might be the first time you’ve heard of Kara. That’s why I’m sharing stories of pioneering women like Kara every Wednesday for #WomenFounderWednesday. Tomorrow starts the new year. A chance for new beginnings, and letting go of things that no longer work in your life. As a working mom, who also feels called to grow a business, I try to take a few moments each day to remember my "WHY." For me, it's God first and my family always. It's also all of the Mamas and mom-supporters out there who are on their own journey of discovery, who are sick of the noise, bots, and people trying to take advantage. Less is more, smooth is fast, and remembering your why is the key to momentum when times get tough. Happy New Year's Eve, y'all! 💕

We're 3 days away from the New Year - what are you working towards in 2025? 💡 A new work-from-home job? 💡 A side hustle? 💡 A new business? Do you have a plan for how to get there? Or are we in "wing-it" mode? There's no shame in either method - not from me. But my planned and tracked goals always seem to fare better. How about you? Let me know in the comments, I genuinely want to know! -- Keep an eye out for more planning resources coming your way from Work-From-Home Mommy. I don't claim expertise in most things, but between motherhood, the Army, and the business world, I can draft a plan with the best of them. 💕

I've been following Erin Riska for a time now, and I find her recruiting content refreshing and personal. She recently shared her ideas about the conflict of advice out there for job seekers. While I've always been in the camp of "there's an appropriate etiquette during the application process (like sending a thank you email)," I understand much of this can be based on the recruiters/hiring managers personal preferences. But please, please don't be that person and abuse the recruiter or hiring manager. They are just trying to do their job, and you are solidifying in their mind that you will never get a job through them. Hard no, folks. Hard no. https://lnkd.in/eeUhGMj2

There’s a lot of conflicting advice for job-seekers out there. Even among those of us who are deeply entrenched in recruiting, you’ll find plenty of opinions that are at odds with one another. 🤷🏽♂️ Resumes should be limited to some specific number if pages v/s resumes can be as long as necessary to share your story. 🤷🏽♂️ You should avoid applying for jobs and instead reach out to hiring stakeholders directly v/s adhere to the application process outlined in the job posting and then reach out to augment your efforts. 🤷🏽♂️ Use creative job-search collateral like video and slide decks to stand out v/s yikes, please don’t do that. Etc, etc, etc. See, the thing is? Most ‘best practices’ are a matter of personal preference, so unless you’re intimately familiar with the preferences of the people recruiting for a specific role, your guess is as good as anyone else’s. I tend to avoid absolutes when advising job-seekers, but there is one thing that I think every recruiter in the world will agree on. One thing where there really is a ‘best practice’ that is so singular, that it should be the ONLY practice, and it’s this: When you receive a message informing you that you’re no longer being considered for a role, you have two options: Respond graciously to acknowledge receipt, wish them the best and reaffirm your interest in the role or company if you’d like to be considered in the future. OR Don’t respond at all. Either is fine, though the former is better (in my opinion). What you should never, ever do is let your frustration get the best of you such that you respond with a string of expletives and effectively preclude yourself from ever being considered again. Seriously. Just…don’t ever do that, OK?
