Fortum 💚 Innovation. Thrilled by our #US friends at Valo Ventures making it onto HackSummit’s list of 100+ Climate VCs in the US to know, and our #European venture capital partner Energy Impact Partners’s portfolio companies myenergi and Instagrid making it onto the Sifted 250 list, ranking Europe’s 250 startups with the highest revenue growth over the past three financial years. In Europe alone there is 24 million small enterprises, and entrepreneurs have been recognized as the main source of innovation and job creation. In general SMEs are considered important to the #EU economy as they account for 99.8% of non-financial enterprises and employ 2/3 of the workforce, i.e. over 100 million people, in the EU. Entrepreneurship and the development of small-to-medium-sized enterprises are key drivers of economic growth and job creation also in the Nordic region. Fortum being the 2nd cleanest energy provider in #Europe, and being the most popular energy solutions provider for #consumers and #SMEs in the #Nordics, having some of the highest energy consumptions per capita in the world, we really appreciate the opportunity to help our customers be successful in their business. Fortum success has always depended on the success of our innovations and our partners. Proud of all our partners and all our teams who continuously innovate on behalf of our millions of customers – both #consumer, #entrepreneur, #enterprise and #corporate customers. Next-generation geothermal energy technologies will play an important role in achieving a 100 percent clean energy grid that is cost-effective and reliable. To unlock its full potential, the World Resources Institute outlined actionable recommendations for state and federal policymakers to foster the responsible development and commercialization of next-gen geothermal energy in its recent Issue Brief. XGS’s Lucy Darago, Ph.D. participated in a WRI roundtable earlier this year to help inform the generation of this report. Thanks to Katrina McLaughlin, Joel Jaeger, Joseph Womble, Lori Bird and Karl Hausker for leading this effort. #geothermal #geothermalenergy #cleanenergy

In noteworthy progress from Inlyte Energy, last week the company announced milestone achievements in their iron-sodium battery technology. In a significant advance, Inlyte has revealed that its cells have achieved over 700 cycles with no loss in energy capacity and 90% roundtrip efficiency, using its iron-sodium chemistry in today's commercially-produced sodium metal chloride cell format. These results, representing over a year of testing, project a battery life of at least 7,000 cycles or 20 years — matching the proven performance of traditional sodium nickel chloride batteries but at a fraction of the cost. https://lnkd.in/gtm75iGb

An incredible two days in Carthage, TN. Here are some of many facts shared: - Hurricane Helene dropped 40 trillion gallons of water and did $7B in damages to agriculture - Each 1° increase in warming increases water vapor by 7% - The US experienced $21B in crop losses in 2023 because of extreme weather - The world lost $3.5T in crop and livestock because of extreme weather - 40% of crops are lost to pests and plant disease globally each year - 70% of global water goes to agriculture, then 20% to industrial uses - Plastics production is now 500M metric tons/year up from 0 in 1950 - Microplastics inhibit plants’ ability to take up water and nutrients - Levels of many minerals decrease in food as CO2 rises in the atmosphere
Last week we had the privilege of attending the Climate Underground conference on regenerative agriculture, hosted by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore and world-renowned chef and advocate Alice Waters. It convened an incredibly diverse group of farmers, scientists, investors, policy makers and researchers to discuss high-performing fungi, fungible carbon offsets and fun facts on deforestation emissions (3Gt CO2e, the highest of all agrifood system categories). Thank you to Lila Preston, the The Climate Reality Project and all the attendees for bringing their best collaborative ideas. #regenerativeagriculture #sustainability #climatetech
