Southern Management Companies – a privately held real estate firm – owns and manages 24,000 apartment-homes, office centers, 4 boutique hotels and a ski resort –all in the mid-Atlantic region. Established in 1965, Southern employs more than 1,500 people. We’re honored to highlight Gail Schnell, a U.S. Army Combat Veteran who served in Afghanistan and is currently pursuing her Executive MBA at The University of Maryland. As part of our 10-year tradition, we’re proud to support Gail with a year of free housing. This opportunity allows Gail to focus on her studies and immerse herself in campus life, fostering connections with her new community and supporting her passion for service. Gail is also the founder and president of the Warrior Canine Connection Club at UMD, empowering fellow veterans by training service dogs that bring therapeutic support to others who have served.   • This year’s Mike McKinley Almost Home Golf Tournament was an unforgettable success, bringing together 140 golfers and raising an incredible $168,080.  It was more than just a day of golf—it was a tribute to the memory of Mike McKinley, who founded this tournament in 1996. Though Mike passed away in 2021, his legacy continues to shine through the lives of the children who benefit from the Almost Home program. This program, which partners with local elementary and middle schools, offers after-school homework and tutoring support, creating lasting impacts on young students. None of this would be possible without the tremendous generosity of our sponsors, vendors, and participants, whose unwavering support allows us to carry forward Mike’s vision. We are deeply grateful for their contributions and for helping us honor Mike’s memory in such a meaningful way. Together, we are making a real difference in our communities and in the future of these children.
