These statistics suck. Let’s change the story. Between 20 to 30% of women with early stage breast cancer will get metastatic breast cancer. It’s estimated there are more than 168,000 women in the U.S. living with metastatic breast cancer. Metastatic breast cancer can’t be cured today. About one-third of women diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in the U.S. live at least 5 years after diagnosis. Some women may live 10 or more years beyond diagnosis.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, support those impacted by breast cancer, and promote the importance of early detection methods. There are more than 4 million breast cancer survivors in the United States, and 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. As it continues to have a far-reaching impact in the lives of many, early detection is vital for catching it in its earliest stages. This month we recognize the brave survivors, stand with those currently fighting breast cancer, and honor those who lost their battle to the disease. #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth #HealthAndWellness

As Breast Cancer Awareness month comes to an end, I have been reflecting on a conversation I had with someone recovering from breast cancer. It is difficult to talk about the emotional and physical toll cancer can have, but she highlighted her desire for everyone to understand the need for early detection. Most breast cancers are self-detected. Finding it in its earliest stages, when it is often easier to treat, is key to successful outcomes. It’s essential we all follow the recommendations for self-examination and screening. At work, we are deeply committed to raising awareness, signposting resources, and creating safe spaces to have, what can often be difficult conversations. Information and resources can be found at breastcancer.org a link I also plan to share today with colleagues.
