Five years ago I wrote a Technology Guide to help first responders better understand the technologies involved in countering unmanned aircraft systems (#cuas). I'd say that document is more relevant today than it was 2019. https://lnkd.in/dQ7ujkq #uas #suas #drones

Hi network, Please share this vacancy, maybe we can find a great candidate who wants to be part of building community resilience! The US Fire Administration, part of FEMA, is looking to hire a program support assistant for the Wildfire and Policy Team! Maybe a great opportunity for a recent graduate or intern looking to get their foot in the door for government work. Great mission, rewarding career! #USFA #WUI #CRR #MakeADifference https://lnkd.in/dKrAbGbg

Once a month, we gather around the (virtual) kitchen table and share successes, challenges, ideas, and big questions all pertaining to community risk reduction. I want to take a moment as we close out 2024 to remember and toast to all our guest speakers this past year... In January we brainstormed CRR data for the development of NERIS with Tom Jenkins. In February we learned about the statewide CRR initiatives in Wisconsin. In March the Jessicas of Fairfax shared their fun, innovative data analysis and communication tactics Jessica L. A. Jessica Handoko. In April we got a sneak peek at some amazing programs that were later presented in full at NFPA's Conference Selena Silva. In May, Grand Rapids, Michigan discussed what's next as they approach the 10-year mark on previous smoke alarm installation programs. In June Jeremy Mitchell chatted with us about utilizing CRR as a fire fighter health and safety initiative. In July we handed the reins to Kim S. and Sylvia Peace and they facilitated a lively roundtable about Older Adult Falls. In August, with the opening of NFPA's Conference call for proposals, we joined forces with Michele Steinberg and Kelly Ransdell to discuss what makes a fantastic CRR, wildfire, and/or public education conference session. In September we discussed the relationship between CRR and wildfire mitigation strategies with Megan Fitzgerald-McGowan and Michele Steinberg. In October we learned about a Florida Youth Emergency Teen Program that merges fire service, emergency management, and a local 4-H club, with Rachel Roberts. In November Peg Paul discussed economic incentives related to CRR initiatives, using the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition as a shining example. And just a couple days ago, we celebrated December with our friends to the north Benoit Ferland and Yan Cuillerier, who discussed how policy in Quebec influences their CRR work, and how that's led to measurable impacts. Karen Berard-Reed and I are excited to build out the 2025 Kitchen Table slate, so if you have any ideas, speakers, or big questions to propose drop us a comment or email! And if you'd like to join us, email crr @ nfpa. org to get on our mailing list. NFPA Thanks to each and every one of you who makes this monthly event a fun and engaging conversation. I've learned so much from you all. Have a safe and happy holiday season! See you next year 😁

Where to begin? When I first got the opportunity to help lead TSI, I didn't want it to be just another tradeshow. TSI had to be different, bring value, and, most importantly, mean something. While it wasn’t perfect, and we had many lessons learned, I am proud to say TSI was a huge success. THANK YOU to everyone who helped make TSI happen. We had incredible keynote events with leaders such as Dr. Lori Moore-Merrell, Stefan Truthän, Fernando Palacios, Chad Council, Jason Cerrano, Garry Briese, and many more. Special shout out to: 🤖 Siddharth Thakur from Paradigm Robotics won the Shark Tank top prize. ⌚ DC Fire and EMS Department (Kate K., and Shawn Downs) won the first annual First Responder Innovation award for their innovative work on wearables for physiological alerting and location tracking. 🚒 The Oklahoma Fire Service. Richard Kelley and Michael Baker MA, EFO welcomed us with open arms this year, and it elevated the game for everyone. These are top-notch fire departments and all-around great people. This year, we hosted 16 breakout sessions on Data, AI, DFR, EMS, CRR, Procurement, and more. I enjoyed many breakout sessions as we leaned into two-way dialogue. Taking inspiration from SXSW and its UN-conference vibe, many sessions had incredible energy. Two workshops stood out: one on how to use AI in the fire service led by Sai Narain and Scott Roseberry and a CRR data workshop led by Chelsea Rubadou, Landon A. Churchill, and Baylie Scott. Seeing the real-time use of technology among all the attendees to help everyone implement best practices after TSI put a smile on my face. Did we move the needle? It's hard to say for sure, but I saw new connections being made, best practices shared, and fresh ideas forged. All at a faster pace to accelerate tech adoption and change in the fire service. For now, I'm moderately content. 😊 Moving into 2025, I’m stoked about the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) Tech Council. Our seven subcommittees (Unmanned Systems, Artificial Intelligence, GIS, Wearables, Data, Communications, and Common Operating Picture) will drive thought leadership content, curate learning experiences, identify industry gaps, and encourage everyone to adopt and manage technology effectively. If you want to join the tech council, send me a note. Lastly, a special shout-out to Dr. Lori and the USFA, National Fire Academy. The #OneVoice campaign is ALIVE and WELL, igniting unity among GOV, EDU, ORG, and COM partners. If you're interested in joining our tech efforts, the Smart FireFighting Podcast, or the upcoming tech events at the NextGen Fire Rescue Tech Summit at FDIC, please let me know! #TSI2024 Jeff Dulin Scott Roseberry Rebecca Harned Josh Waldo, CFO, EFO John Butler, Fire Chief Donna Black Dan Munsey, MPA, EFO, CFO Mark Novak Erik Litzenberg Dustin Morrow John Morrison Peter Houlihan Mike Binney John Oates Preet Bassi Lauren Laramore Ocoma Kirk McKinzie Adi Naor Pomerantz

Many of you who know me, and have seen me present know I like to challenge the audience. I like to give them something new to consider, and more importantly I try to push them into a degree of discomfort with the status quo. Above all I want to push them to feel the desire to affect a change in their organizations. I end my presentations with the challenge “What are you going to do on Monday?” So often we attend conferences, classes, trainings and other events and we bring back ideas, concepts, products and something more valuable than all of it…we bring back an opportunity. However… Knowledge is only power when it’s applied. My own life has taken some unexpected turns, especially this year. As I work to close this year out and start anew in 2025 both personally and professionally, I’m faced with all kinds of thoughts. Ideas. Concepts. New products, contacts, industries and a host of concerns, along with a huge pile of uncertainty. I sat at dinner tonight with a hundred different thoughts, decisions, concerns and emotions running through my head. I finished and went for the always tasteless yet mildly entertaining fortune cookie. You can’t make this stuff up. The image below was what I pulled from that stale, dry, tasteless wrapper. You know what else I’m staring at right now besides all the issues and concerns, stresses and difficulties? A huge stack of opportunities. A chance to grow personally in a way I’ve never been exposed to. New beginnings and new relationships with enormous potential. Opportunities to grow professionally and most importantly to use my experience and skills to help others grow as well. A good friend asked me to come to dinner with his team and speak to them briefly about innovation. My advice was that innovation doesn’t always mean new technology. Sometimes inspiration and innovation come from the dry, tasteless and stale wrapper someone else put around it. So I’ll take my own challenge to heart as I close this year out and look to a fresh start in 2025. With all of the change and challenges, learning lessons and opportunities 2024 has presented perhaps it’s fitting that my birthday this year falls on….you guessed it…a Monday. My challenge to you and now to myself remains the same and you will hear it from me all year in 2025… What are you going to do on Monday?
