From Fences to Our Future Workforce: The Power of Introducing New Careers to Young Children
It's never too early to spark curiosity and inspire the next generation. Introducing young children to a variety of careers, especially in the Architecture, Engineering, Construction, and Construction Management (AEC-CM) industries, can have a profound impact on their future and help address the workforce development shortage we face today.
By exposing children to the AEC-CM fields, we open their minds to the exciting possibilities within these industries. This early exposure can ignite a passion for building, designing, and managing projects, encouraging them to pursue careers that are crucial for our society's growth and infrastructure. When children learn about these professions, they gain a better understanding of the world around them and the roles people play in creating and maintaining our built environment. This knowledge can boost their confidence, encourage them to dream big, and motivate them to pursue their interests with enthusiasm.
Sometimes, something as simple as a conversation about a fence can spark curiosity. 6D PMCM's Sr. Project Manager, Mike Torres, shared with five different classes at Meadow Homes Elementary School about the modernization project nearing completion on their campus. He focused on the installation of a new chain link fence protecting the recently installed HVAC units, while explaining the roles of the various construction teams and the importance of their work.
The students were engaged, asking insightful questions like, “How is this fence different from any other fence?” and “What if you get stuck inside the fence while installing?” Their curiosity highlighted their critical thinking skills and bright potential. The teachers were pleased with the demonstration, as some had just been covering the topic of construction in their classrooms. A special thank you to the staff of Mt. Diablo Unified School District and Meadow Homes Elementary School for extending the learning experience beyond the classroom!
Addressing the workforce development shortage starts with inspiring the next generation. Let's invest in our children's futures by providing them with opportunities to explore different careers in the AEC-CM industries. Whether through school programs, community events, or simple conversations at home, we can make a lasting difference in their lives and the future of our industry.
Together, we can nurture the next generation of innovators, leaders, and changemakers in the AEC-CM fields.
