About us
Founded in 1974, The Engineering Enterprise has been a consulting electrical engineering firm dedicated to exceptional service. The company employs a staff of experienced professionals in two offices, each carefully selected for their skill, dedication and ability to work collectively to generate cost effective, functional electrical system designs. We believe that the capacity of a firm is limited only by the initiative...the enterprise...of its members. In a world of growing technology complexity, we still believe that pride of authorship and basic craftsmanship fostered by a sense of personal commitment is essential to sound and creative engineering design. We support an attitude of excellence and seek pre-eminence in our accomplishments.

The Engineering Enterprise would like to announce the retirement of Brian Smith, who was a Principal of the firm for 35 years and served as President for 20 years. Brian joined TEE in 1978 after meeting co-founder Chuck Shalley, playing pick-up basketball in Oakland. After demonstrating his basketball skills, posting up and playing excellent defense against Chuck, Chuck recognized that there was something special about this young man and offered him a job as a manual drafter. Brian started at TEE on January 2nd, 1978. Brian quickly ascended to an electrical designer position. He was intensely curious about electrical systems and our industry and would spend his lunchtime sitting with other members of the company asking them questions about their projects and how they approached electrical system design. He absorbed every detail of what he was told and applied that to his own projects. The second most important thing he learned during this time was how to develop and maintain relationships within the industry. Brian worked closely with dozens of architects, contractors, owners, and other engineers over his 46-year career, who all appreciated his preparation, responsiveness, attention to detail, deadline driven focus, and his overall work ethic, which seemed superhuman at times. Brian would sit in project meetings and pay close attention to the other trades and how their systems were designed, installed, and most importantly, how they connected to and impacted the electrical systems he was designing. His first piece of advice to all young electrical designers was to do the same as he would always say that you need to understand how other building systems work to be an effective electrical engineer. Brian was named a Principal of the firm in 1989 and was named President in 2001. He was instrumental in TEE’s growth from a single office in the Bay Area to five offices that cover the entire state of California. The variety of projects he worked on over his career was impressive and included the St. Mary’s College Athletic Center in Moraga, Levi’s Plaza in San Francisco, Chevron Park in San Ramon, UC Merced Social Sciences and Management Building, Palo Alto Medical Foundation in Palo Alto, the U.S. Courthouse and Federal Building in Sacramento, and hundreds of others. Brian is a kind, thoughtful, generous person who always went out of his way to help others and is a lasting example of what a great person, partner, and friend should be. He was a steady presence at The Engineering Enterprise for his entire 46-year career, consistently exceeding expectations. Everyone who interacted with him appreciated his dedication to our company, our employees, and his projects. Post retirement, Brian is spending his time hanging out with his extended family, babysitting his grandchildren, working in his shop, and clearing leaves from all the trees on his property. Everyone at The Engineering Enterprise wishes Brian a happy retirement.
