Towana Looney is finally free from dialysis after eight years, thanks to a groundbreaking gene-edited pig kidney transplant performed at NYU Langone Health. On November 25, surgeons led by Dr. Robert Montgomery successfully completed the procedure for Towana, who had struggled to find a kidney match after being on the transplant waitlist since 2017. Towana had donated a kidney to her mother in 1999 but developed kidney failure years later due to complications from high blood pressure after pregnancy. Dialysis worsened her condition, making a transplant her only hope. Towana's transplant is the third pig kidney transplant in a living human, marking a significant step in the investigational practice of transplanting organs between species, known as xenotransplantation—a potential solution to the organ shortage crisis. Now in better health, Towana is currently the only person in the world with a pig organ. "She serves as a beacon of hope to those struggling with kidney failure," says Dr. Montgomery. “I feel like I’ve been given another chance at life,” Towana says. “I cannot wait to be able to travel again and spend more quality time with my family and grandchildren.” Learn more about Towana's story and our ongoing innovations in xenotransplantation: https://lnkd.in/etS4c4in

  • NYU Langone Health breast oncologist Elizabeth Comen, MD recently joined top voices in women’s healthcare at the first-ever White House Conference on Women’s Health Research in Washington, DC, where she spoke on the vital need to understand how women’s life experiences shape their health—especially when it comes to conditions like breast cancer. “Unless we are listening and having an open mind to what are the issues that women are actually facing, what can we invest in, but also understand what women actually experience,” that will help drive research forward, she said. “Two women can have the same biology of their breast cancer, but how they experience their illness is uniquely determined by their culture, by their religion, by the stories they’ve been told about themselves and their bodies.” Dr. Comen joined leaders from the American Heart Association, Peloton, Midi Health, and the Black Women’s Health Imperative on a panel discussing the future of women’s healthcare.
