More amazing news to start off 2025!
What a way to end a year of Abundance! The Village Launch Catalytic Fund at Abundance Capital, managed by Mill Village Ministries, disbursed two working capital loans totaling $130,000. The VL team, in consultation with its board of advisors set patient, risk tolerant terms designed to provide supportive capital to businesses that are established and have room to grow, with the right kind of friends and family money. These loans have a fixed interest rate of 5%, with 2% available to be returned upon repayment. The terms are patient, repayments can be deferred and there is a community pledge associated with it - because, as well all know, it takes all of us to support businesses that are generating wealth and health, particularly for communities that have been historically disenfranchised. We are profoundly grateful to a host of Abundance Angels who came together with Mill Village Ministries and Village Launch to create this catalytic fund at Abundance. We are especially grateful to these entrepreneurs for taking the chance to build next generation, high impact businesses that meet their customers' needs and operate in community. We look forward to seeing the good that the extraordinary LaShonn Edmunds and Taquasia Holmes create. Pictured left: LaShonn Edmunds is the CEO and Founder of CAIRS Shoes. On the right: Taquasia Holmes (center) is the Senior Paralegal and Owner, of TMH Para Support Services. We love kicking off 2025 with this kind of news! Congrats to Incora Health & Lindsey Calcutt, PhD!
ICYMI: Incora Health, an SCRA Member Company, was featured by Forbes for its Women-Centric Tech & Data. These technologies and this testing can provide much-needed data about women since, as Ms. Papin-Zoghbi summarized, “Women’s data is essential to advancing the field and driving meaningful research”. Lindsey Calcutt, PhD, CEO and Co-Founder of Incora Health, agreed that technologies, such as at-home tests and wearables made for women, can not only offer “more personalized and relevant health data” but can be “functional” and “beautiful” as well, like Incora Health’s smart earrings. But she cautioned female consumers against technology that still defaults to men. “Beware of bad insights,” she warned. “Tech that isn’t made specifically for women and is designed to default for men can provide poor or even dangerous recommendations for women.” Fitness trackers are one type of wearable that can potentially be “wildly inaccurate” for women because a woman’s resting heartbeat changes throughout her menstrual cycle. Dr. Calcutt explained, “When wearables don’t distinguish the difference, they may prompt women to over-exert themselves during their workouts.” ➡️ Read more: bit.ly/49XVCdv

If you haven't already subscribed to the NextGEN entrepreneur newsletter visit www.nextgengvl.org, scroll to the bottom and you'll find a spot to enter your email to subscribe. December's will hit inboxes tomorrow. Read below for a snippet of what you're missing, not to mention all the opportunities for events, programs and news for founders in Greenville, SC! November's Snippet: Thanksgiving signals the end of the year is right around the corner. If you're a person into setting goals, you may be reflecting on those you set twelve months ago. You may have already blown through them, or maybe 2024 threw some unexpected challenges your way (who had an Upstate Hurricane on their bingo card?) So, if you find yourself lamenting missed opportunities, let me remind you - you still have time. The "let's circle back in the New Year" conversations may have already started but that doesn't mean you can't finish the things you said you'd do THIS year. There are still sales to be made, products to be launched and investments to be received. For some of you, your best day of the year hasn't happened yet...it's waiting for you in the next few weeks. No matter how '24 went, you still have time to finish strong - to give yourself grace, to still be human, to find the balance between a goal-achieving machine and knowing that there are a lot more external circumstances outside of our control than we'd like to admit. As you sit around the turkey table next week, I'd like you to think about all the things you learned this year, all the great people you met this year, the circumstances you weathered (see what I did there?) and how you navigated them. I'd love for you to reply to this email and let me know the things you're thankful for this year. Whether it's people you've met through this community, goals you accomplished or simply personal growth - I'd love for you to share them. I'm thankful for this community and for each of you who make this journey rewarding, fulfilling and fun! Happy Thanksgiving, founders!

The brainpower in this room would light up an entire Christmas tree (a big one)! We rolled out the red carpet for JACS Capital and former CEO of GE, Jeff Immelt; gathering startup founders, investors, and Big Co (BMW Manufacturing Co., LLC, Michelin, Milliken & Company) to talk about NextGEN and the #StartupGVL ecosystem and in Board Member Marty Osborn's words, it was "Genius." Not us, but the energy, transparency, and thoughtfulness of the conversation was just what we needed to close out the year. We're left with inspiration and a challenge to increase access to capital in SC, continue to pull thought partners together more often, and pursue growth. And, a common thread we've heard throughout the year - we all need to think bigger. Thank you to SCRA: South Carolina Research Authority for allowing us to use your beautiful space and to everyone who joined around the table. We appreciate all you do for NextGEN and the startup community!
