  • The Japanese American National Museum is undergoing a campaign to revitalize the campus in Little Tokyo and Landmark PM could not be more thrilled to be the owner’s representative and project manager to help them achieve this vision. The project will include the renovation of the interiors and a new core exhibition to provide a more cohesive and relevant experience for visitors. The project is being designed by HOK, in conjunction with exhibition designer Ralph Appelbaum Associates (RAA). Fun fact - Gyo Obata, the “O” in HOK, designed the original pavilion. We are beyond proud and grateful to be a part of this revitalization team that will help the museum better tell the story of the past for the present and the future. Last Saturday the Japanese American National Museum hosted the Honoring Common Ground event to honor JANM’s core exhibition “Common Ground: The Heart of Community” that highlights more than 140 years of Japanese American history and has been the center of JANM for the last 26 years.   If you missed it, get out there and visit the Museum before the end of year as our project will completely reimagine this as part of the upcoming renovation.   The soon to be former Common Ground exhibition incorporates hundreds of objects, documents, and photographs from JANM’s collection and chronicles Japanese American history, beginning in the late 1800s with the early days of the Issei pioneers and continuing through the World War II incarceration, post-war resettlement, and the redress movement. Among the many notable artifacts on display is a Heart Mountain barracks, an original structure saved and preserved from the concentration camp in Wyoming. The barracks will be reimagined and central to the new "In the Future We Call Now" core exhibition as seen in this rendering! HOK Ralph Appelbaum Associates (RAA) Landmark PM

Fun fact about our La Brea Tar Pits & Museum reimagination project -- the unique smells we all have come to love are actually not the methane.   Methane has been an interesting topic on this project because… well, we just have so much of it. This natural gas is colorless, flammable, a greenhouse gas, and actually odorless.   If Methane is odorless what are we smelling at the Tar Pits? I'm glad you asked. What you are enjoying is hydrogen sulfide and a mixture of other organic and decayed compounds from the ancient past.   Since the methane concentration levels on this site are well over 12,500 ppmv (Site Design Level V), we are required to install a full active methane mitigation system on the new museum building that includes impervious membranes, a sub-slab venting and extraction system, a gas detection system, and an alarm system. Special thanks to Verdantas and Terra-Petra for helping us navigate the methane mitigation solutions.   Next time you visit the Tar Pits, remember that what you're getting a whiff of is not the methane! The Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon theater at the Griffith Observatory had been more or less untouched since the renovation and expansion project in 2006 -- and accordingly it was in major need of a major upgrade! What better time to fast-track this project than in support of their new film, Pacific Standard Universe, as part of PST ART: Art & Science Collide. Landmark PM was brought onboard to oversee this "schedule ambitious" project as part of the first phase at the Observatory. We're grateful to have worked with TheatreDNA and Solotech Inc. for the programming, design, procurement, installation, and commissioning of the new theatre equipment. Last Monday we attended a preview of Pacific Standard Universe, and the show will be going live this weekend! I would encourage you all make a trip out to the Griffith Observatory to see this new film about the ways people have represented the cosmos across time and cultures, with art and science colliding, and now you'll get to see it in high definition and Dolby Atmos! https://lnkd.in/g6_2ZkVH

The Japanese American National Museum (JANM) is embarking on the most significant renovation of its Pavilion since it opened in 1998, including an ambitious reimagination of the core exhibition. To continue engaging with the public when the Pavilion closes for renovation, JANM is kicking off "JANM on the GO" in January 2025 with a series of special exhibits, public programs, festivals and pop-up events. Check out more about it in this video, including a few renderings of our project! https://lnkd.in/gUS2NJpf The renovation project will provide a new greeting experience for visitors and better tell the story of Japanese Americans through new content, artifacts, and personal histories drawing from JANM's extensive collections. This project is currently underway with design and will commence construction in 2025. Landmark PM is proud to be the owner's representative and project manager to help JANM reimagine this landmark for our communities!
