Klein & Hoffman is proud to be part of the Experience Evolution project, a multi-phased transformation of Chicago's iconic Shedd Aquarium. With a history spanning nearly a century, this renovation blends structural improvements with historic preservation for a second century-ready aquarium. Led by Kathleen Strnad, RA, Allysia Youngquist, RA, Bill Ipema, S.E., P.E., and Glenn Johnson, the K&H team is working on crucial updates such as replacing skylights, raising roofs, and preserving the historic integrity of this nearly 100-year-old landmark—all while Shedd remains open to millions of visitors. The collaboration involves an outstanding team, including Valerio Dewalt Train (architect of record), MSA (Mechanical Services Associates Corp.) (mechanical engineer of record), Pepper Construction Group/BMI (general contractor), JLL (owner’s representative), and Shedd Aquarium. Dive into the innovative solutions that turn a historic landmark into a cutting-edge exhibit space here: https://lnkd.in/e_K_wAy4 #KleinandHoffman #SheddAquarium #ExperienceEvolution

We sympathize with Bears fans everywhere who have endured a challenging season, but one of the key things our structural engineers have been focused on is Soldier Field. With its storied history as the NFL’s oldest and smallest stadium, and as the first to achieve LEED certification, it holds a special place in Chicago and football history. The question of whether the Chicago Bears will remain in Chicago or move to the suburbs has been a hot topic across Illinois this season. One critical consideration is the potential for adaptive reuse of Soldier Field—a complex task given its historic colonnades, exterior memorials, and deep cultural significance. Our structural engineers have been toying with the idea of “what if,” using their creativity and tools to explore possibilities for a modern redesign of Soldier Field. They have imagined how an underground parking structure could be carefully placed below the field and maintain the stadium’s historic elements, such as the colonnades and exterior memorials. Check out this structural rendering our talented team has developed from public discussion on this topic—it’s a glimpse into how adaptive reuse and imaginative structural design can reimagine Soldier Field’s iconic legacy. What would you like to see for the future of Soldier Field? Share your thoughts on how adaptive reuse can honor its legacy! Bill Ipema, S.E., P.E. The Shedd Aquarium has officially unveiled its new exhibit, Wonder of Water, a bustling freshwater and saltwater ecosystem. This reimagining of the Shedd Aquarium's historic Rotunda is a mesmerizing journey where guests can stand at the heart of the aquarium and explore the biodiversity of life beneath the water’s surface. Klein & Hoffman contributed to Wonder of Water by providing advanced structural engineering as the EOR. Integrating the new curvilinear concrete structure to rise within the original steel frame of the historic Rotunda required detailed collaboration between all the design partners to create the new gem of the Shedd Aquarium. Working Together, we helped bring this vision to life while maintaining the integrity of the historic space. In addition to being one of the largest planted freshwater exhibits in the world, the Wonder of Water includes: -Vibrant & beautiful coral -1,500 bold and beautiful reef fish -5,000 fish swimming amongst a variety of 50 lush plant species -And much more This milestone is part of Shedd’s Centennial Commitment to evolve guest experiences and drive conservation efforts leading up to its centennial in 2030. Klein & Hoffman is grateful to have contributed to an innovative, immersive experience for guests to be mesmerized by the beauty of aquatic nature.
